Local Coaches & Omnibuses

The district was served by a number of horse-drawn coaches to carry passengers and goods to and from, and within the district.

The pick-up points were usually local coaching inns, including:

• Golden Lion, Todmorden
• Old Cock, Halifax
• Old Crown, Halifax
• Red Lion, Elland
• Roebuck Inn, Halifax
• Upper George Inn, Halifax
• White Hart, Halifax

Many of the coaches had well-known names:

• British Queen: Upper George Inn, Halifax to Bradford & Leeds [1845]
• British Yeoman: White Hart, Halifax to Bradford & Leeds [1845]
• Defence: White Hart, Halifax to Bradford & Leeds [1845]
• Free Trader: Upper George Inn, Halifax to Bradford & Leeds [1845]
• Hark Forward: Red Lion, Elland to Halifax & Wakefield
• Perseverance: Golden Lion, Todmorden through Todmorden
• Prince Albert: White Hart, Halifax to Bradford & Leeds [1845]
• Rockingham: White Hart, Halifax to Bradford & Leeds [1845]
• Royal Fleece: Red Lion, Elland to Halifax & Sheffield [1882]
• Royal Hope: Roebuck Inn, Halifax to Bradford & Leeds [1845]
• Shuttle: Golden Lion, Todmorden through Todmorden
• True Briton: Old Crown, Halifax to Bradford & Leeds [1815]
