Lieutenant-Colonel.
He served during World War I and became Brigadier-General in 1916.
He was appointed CMG, awarded the DSO and the Croix de Guerre.
An amateur archæologist, he excavated and revealed the foundations
of the main buildings of the priory in 1902.
On 12th July 1899, he married Aimée Milbourne-Swinnerton-Pilkington
at Knightsbridge, London.

From the 16th century, the Armytage family were prominent in
Clifton and Brighouse, and held considerable amounts of land and
property in the district.
From 1564, they lived on the Kirklees Estate.
The family held the Baronetcy of Kirklees, and even though the
original line died out in 1737, the baronetcy was re-created and
still exists today.
The names John and George were extremely popular in the
family and are found in virtually every generation.
This can lead to considerable confusion for the unwary.
The members of the family discussed here are those descended from
William Armytage.
The family owned much land in and around Brighouse.
In 1816, about 100 acres in the centre of the town was sold for
development.
