The Halifax, Huddersfield & Keighley Railway was recorded in December 1863 when shares were advertised to raise £650,000 capital for the venture.
The line was proposed to open up a more direct communication between Halifax, Huddersfield and Keighley and the coal fields of south Yorkshire. The line was to be 20 miles in length and ran from Huddersfield Station, Elland (and West Vale, Greetland and Stainland, by a branch line commencing near Elland), Halifax, Ovenden, Queensbury, Thornton, Denholme, Cullingworth, Wilsden, Harden, Bingley and on to Keighley having united with the Midland Railway. It was to be a through route to the north of England and Scotland, and it was said to be the shortest route to London.
