Charlotte's visits to London

Charlotte made several visits to London.

On some of these, she stayed at the Chapter Coffee House.

February 1842: She and Emily and their father passed through London en route to Brussels and the Pensionnat Heger
July 1848: She and Anne made their trip to Smith, Elder & Company in order to reveal the identities of the Bells.
The sisters insisted on using the pseudonym of the Misses Brown.
They went to the Royal Italian Opera House, Covent Garden to see a performance of Rossini's Barber of Seville – Charlotte had a thundering headache.
They also visited to Royal Academy and the National Portrait Gallery
November 1849: She visited London following the publication of Shirley.
Thackeray – and several critics – came to dine.
She met Harriet Martineau. She saw performances of Othello and Macbeth starring William Charles Macready [1793-1873]
June 1850: She stayed with George Smith and his family in Bayswater.
She visited the House of Commons and the Zoological Society Gardens, Regents Park.
She visited the Chapel Royal in St James's. George Smith arranged for her to meet the Duke of Wellington here.
She went to George Richmond's studio on 13th, 15th and 24th June to have her portrait drawn.
There was a party in her honour at Thackeray's home in Kensington
28th May 1851: She went to London to see a lecture given by Thackeray at Almanack's Assembly Rooms, St James's.
She visited the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace.
On 7th June, she saw Rachel as Adrienne in Scribe's Adrienne Lecouvreur. On 21st June, she saw Rachel as Camille in Corneille's Les Trois Horaces at the Theáatre Français.
On 25th June, she and George Smith visited the phrenologist T. P. Browne under the names Mr and Miss Fraser.
She attended a performance by Charles Dickens's band of amateur actors in the Hanover Rooms, London.
She returned to Haworth on 27th June
January 1853: She visited from 5th January to 2nd February 1853.
She visited the Bank of England and the Royal Exchange.
She visited Newgate Prison, Pentonville Prison, and the Foundling Hospital, to gather background for her Story of Willie Ellin
November 1853: She was concerned about George Smith and planned to visit London. She cancelled the visit at short notice
