The Shambles, Halifax
The Shambles was the butchery area of the market in Halifax.
It stood near the Market Cross in Old Market, Halifax until 1???
Undressed cloth was sold in the butcher's shambles before the meat
market commenced
The word is found in many parts of the country, and originally meant
a table for displaying meat for sale
and comes from the Old English word scamul meaning
a bench, counter, or stool.
