Family of James Goodson Jr. and Selah Pollard

James Goodson, probably born between 1765 and 1770 [4], was married to Selah Pollard, daughter of Joshua Pollard of Darlington District, South Carolina. He appears to be usually referred to as James Goodson Jr., to distinguish from James Goodson Sr.

The 1800 census of Darlington District listed two James Goodson households:

James Goodson, p. 120
2m<10,1m 10-16, 1m 16-26, 1m>45, 1f<10, 1f 10-16, 2f 16-26, 1f 26-45
James Goodson, p. 123
1m<10, 1m 10-16, 1m 26-45, 4f<10, 1f 16-26 (1 slave)

The first of these was the James Goodson later referred to as James Goodson Sr. Others enumerated in 1800 were Arthur Goodson, p.116, George Goodson, p. 123, and William Goodson (2 on p. 116, one on p. 123).

The 1810 census of Darlington District listed three James Goodson households, with James Goodson Sr. now distinguished from two other James Goodsons:

James Goodson Sr., p.663
1m<10, 3m 10-16, 1m>45, 2f 16-26, 1f>45
James Goodson You., p.674
2m<10, 1m 26-45, 1f 10-16, 1f 16-26
James Goodson Jr., p.671
1m<10, 1m 10-16, 1m 26-45, 5f<10, 2f 10-16, 1f 26-45, 7 slaves

The 1820 census of Darlington District listed two James Goodson households:

James Goodson Sr. 1m 10-16, 2m 16-26, 1m>45, 1f>45
James Goodson Jr. 1m 10-16, 1m>45, 2f<10, 2f 10-16, 1f>45 (12 slaves)
-- next to Elijah Goodson and Henry and James Blackman

The 1830 census of Darlington County listed:

James Goodson, p.212
James Goodson, sen. 2m 10-15, 1m 90-100, 1f 70-80
James Goodson Jr., p.214
James Goodson, Jr. 1m 60-70, 1f 50-60

James Goodson died in 1839 [6]. Selah Goodson is listed in the 1840 census in Darlington County.

From Sidney: Nancy and Wiley Goodson are administrators for Joshua's estate in 1833. Nancy Goodson, Wiley Goodson, Caleb Odum and James Goodson Jr. are bound by a security of six hundred dollars for the administration of the estate. Most of the expenses listed are for childrens' clothing. Only Wiley and Thomas are named. I only know of two later Thomas Goodsons: one was 42 on the 1860 Darlington Census. One is 21 on the 1850 census, in the household of Ann Goodson who is 45. This Thomas would appear to be the one written about in the Confederate Baptist, May 13, 1863: "Thomas Goodson, aged 33, 25th Reg. SCV, Swift Creek Baptist, Darlington, two orphan children."

  4. Based on age in census records, which assumes all are accurate.
  5. Birth and death dates, and maiden name of Charlotte, wife of Wiley Goodson, from tombstone inscriptions of Old Swift Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, as recorded in Darlington District Cemetery Survey Vol. II compiled by members of the Old Darlington District Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society 1994 (shared by Chris Outlaw).
  6. Estate papers of James Goodson, Darlington County, SC, transcribed by Sidney Holdrege, which state that James Goodson died intestate in 1839. Horace Rudisill's Goodson file gives James Goodson died 16 April 1845. The estate papers name his widow, children and grandchildren.
