The town stands on the left bank of the river Irwell, about 2 miles from the confluence of the Roach with that river. The name is Saxon, signifying either a castle or market town. Nearby Townships and Adjacent Parishes Middleton Parish comprising Middleton, Radcliffe (practically a Parish in its own right), Ainsworth, Ashworth, Birch in Hopwood, Birtle-cum-Bamford, Pilsworth and Thornham . Prestwich Parish comprising Stand, Ringley, and Unsworth Whalley Parish comprising Haslingden, Newchurch in Rossendale, Bacup, Goodshaw (Booth), Accrington, Church, Altham, Padiham, Holme in Cliviger, Burnley, Little Marsden, Newchurch in Pendle, Colne, Ciltheroe, Downham and Whalley. Bolton le Moors Parish comprising Bradshaw, Turton, Walmsley (not to be confused with Walmersley), Rivington, Blackrod, Little Lever and Bolton.
