The Buckreus Family

At least two of the Buckreus immigrants came from the village of Steinberg, Kreis (County) Kronach, Oberfranken, Bavaria. Church records have confirmed this as their birthplace. The map on the left indicates where Steinberg is in Germany. Click on the map on the right to see a close-up. Steinberg is slightly northeast of Kronach.

I was thrilled to find a Web-site for the Wilhelmsthal-Steinberg community which includes a history, aerial photograph, a photograph of the hillside community, and the historic castle church where our ancestors worshipped. The site is in German, but you might be curious enough to take a look - www.wilhelmsthal.de/

To find the history, click on the HISTORIE flag, then click on OT STEINBERG.
SONSTIGES on the main page will take you to the aerial photographs and more.

You don't want to explore the site? Here are the photos! Click on them to see a larger version.

If I translated the history correctly, the town received its charter in 1150. The old church, first mentioned in 1427, is no longer in use, but is being restored. The new church was built between 1911 and 1913, long after our families departed.
