The Buckreus Family in California
California - Franz Buckreus; nieces Anna, Barbara and Augusta
Arriving in July 1871, Franz Buckreus first lived in New York City and New Jersey, moving to Bakersfield, California in 1875. The son of Dr. Michael Buckreus and Babetta Sauer, he was born in Bamberg, Bavaria in 1845. He retired in San Francisco, dying there in 1924. He never married.
Franz was employed as a hospital steward and barber in New York and New Jersey. In Bakersfield, he owned his own barber shop for 8 years, selling it in 1883 to become the superintendant of the Kern County Hospital. He served in this capacity until his retirement, sometime between 1910 and 1919. Under his leadership, the hospital grew from a small frame building to the facility pictured below.
In related duties, Franz served as the county health officer for 14 years, and was elected county coroner and public administrator from 1885 to 1903. This is quite an accomplishment for a man without a medical degree!
A charter member of BPOE Lodge No. 266 in Bakersfield, he served on Inner Guard in 1895-6 and was a Trustee in 1900-01, 1907-08 and 1912-13. In addition, he was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias.
The voter registration information describes Franz as 5 foot 10.5 inches tall with blue eyes and light-colored hair.
- Franz's niece, Anna Franziske Buckreus, joined him in Bakersfield in 1908 and moved with him to San Francisco about 1919. She was born in 1875 in Bamberg, Bavaria, and was the daughter of Johann Buckreus and Fannie Fexer. A nurse for many years, she lived and worked with her uncle at the hospital. In San Francisco she was a nurse's aide during World War I, and later worked for the Aetna insurance company. She died in 1959. She never married.
- Anna's sister, Barbara, arrived in San Francisco approximately 1925. She was born in Bamberg, Bavaria in 1876 and died in 1960 in San Francisco. Barbara never married.
- A third sister, Augusta, may have emigrated with Barbara to San Francisco about 1925. She was born in 1880 in Bamberg and died in San Francisco in 1947. Augusta never married.
