  • Adam Brouwer is covered by Hoffman in "Brouwer Beginnings" (TAG 24:27-28). "Most authorities consider him to be the founder of the Monmouth County, New Jersey branch of the Brouwer-Brewer family. If this is correct, and I believe it is he m. first Deborah Allen..." The children mentioned in their father's and their grandmother Allen's wills "are to be found in Monmouth County. Stillwell (6:51) makes a mistake in stating that Elazerius was a son of Adam by his second wife, Deborah Allen. She was his first wife. Some authorities have given Adam a first wife, Magdalena Jacobs, but this is a mix-up with the wife of Adam the settler. The children joined the Quakers." The Cropsy notes at the Long Island Historical Society give a different version of the family (from Hoffman's). "They list an additional daughter Lydia (not named in the wills) who m. a Throgmorton; Edmund Lafreta is called Edward; and the husband of Deborah, Francis Morris. Records not yet come to light may straighten out these apparent contradictions."9
  • It is noted that the birth dates of the children of Adam Brewer and Deborah Allen do not come from any primary source. They have been passed down in various published accounts of the family with their origins having been said to be a Bible record, a copy of which was received by William A.D. Eardeley prior to the publication of his manuscript in 1923 ("Brower Family and Langdon Family," Queens County Public Library).
  • In my own analysis I consider Adam Brewer as a possible son of Jacob Brouwer and Annatje Bogardus. He has traditionally been placed as the son, Adam baptized in 1696 at the Brooklyn Dutch Church. However, it is important to note that there is no direct or primary evidence known that links the person named Adam Brewer, found in Monmouth County, New Jersey, to the son Adam, baptized by the couple Jacob Brouwer and Annatje Bogardus. To date this association as only been assumed and passed on from one published account to the next. It appears that to date, no thorough thought has been given to this matter. William Hoffman himself (in "Brouwer Beginnings") simply states that he accepts this placement but does not state a reason for his acceptance. However, if the same degree of investigation and thought is applied to the placement of Adam Brewer among the sons of the progenitor, Adam Brouwer, then an entirely different conclusion is likely to be drawn.
  • Adam Brewer and Adolphus Brouwer may be one and the same While tradition has placed Adam Brewer of Monmouth County as Adam, son of Jacob Brouwer & Annatje Bogardus, circumstantial evidence such as naming patterns imply that Adam Brewer may have been born Adolphus, the son of Willem Brouwer and Elizabeth Simpson.
