Hendrick Verscheur1

b. 27 May 1671
  • Hendrick Verscheur was born at Bushwick, Long Island, New York.1
  • He was baptized on 27 May 1671 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, sponsors Jacobus Jochemszen, Adriantje Dircks.2
  • Also known as Hendrick van der Schueren.3
  • In 1687, Hendrick was one of thirty-three men of Bushwick who were required to take the oath of allegiance to the British Crown. At the time of his father's death (prior to 1698) the family property was divided between his mother and older brother, Jochem, and Hendrick does not appear on the 1698 census taken at Bushwick. Additionally, the census records do not indicate that Hendrick was living in either his mother's or brother's households. It is likely, therefore, that he moved elsewhere, and a likely possibility is that he moved to Somerset County or Middlesex County, New Jersey, where a number of familes from Bushwick had relocated to. This area referred to, around New Brunswick, New Jersey, had five Dutch churches established in 1700 and shortly thereafter. The extant baptismal records of 1703-1713, include a number of former Bushwick and Brooklyn families, who had been closely associated with Hendrick's parents and grandparents. Although Hendrick can not be identified with any certainty in these records, he may be the Hendrick Visscher, who in 1703 acquired 300 acres on the Raritan River near Bound Brook in Somerset County. He is said to have lived in a house originally built in 1688, until his death on 17 Oct 1749, at which time he was over 70 years of age (placing his birth date close to 1671, when Hendrick Verscheur was baptized). Provost (Early Settlers of Bushwick) considers Hendrick Visscher of Somerset County to likely be Hendrick Verscheur, son of Wouter Gysbertszen and Dorothea Caljer based upon approximate ages of birth and the movement of associated families from one location to the next, however, this remains a best theory, and complete proof has not been found.4
