  • Joseph Odell was born on 7 November 1761 at Charlotte Precinct, near Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., New York.1
  • He married first at Dutchess Co., New York, on 7 October 1778 Sarah Lewis, daughter of Morris Lewis and Phebe Doughty.2

  • Joseph Odell died on 30 March 1824 at Odelltown, Lower Canada.1
  • Joseph served (in 1778 just after his marriage) in the 4th Regt. Dutchess Co. Militia under Capt. Lemuel Conklin, Col. Morris Graham, the same company in which his father, Joseph Odell and father-in-law, Morris Lewis enlisted. Joseph Odell received a grant of land in the Township of Hemmingford (now in Quebec, Canada, just north of the border with New York) in 1795. He is considered to be the founder of Odelltown. In 1801 he, "built a colonial mansion whose rooms were furnished with fine furniture made to his oder..." During the War of 1812 the home served as headquarters for Gen. Wilkinson, and Joseph's stone store across the street served as barracks. Joseph Odell served as Captain of the 1st Batt'n Townships Militia. His property was the site of battles between British and American forces and in 1817 he petitioned the British Government to recoup loses incurred to his property during the war. Joseph Odell, Jr. was appointed Justice of the Peace for the Montreal District on 22 Apr 1809. Apparently he held the office for the remainder of his life. He was an "ardent Mason" his stone store and tombstone carved with emblems of Masonry. There are land records pertaining to Joseph Odell, Jr. in both Plattsburg, New York and in Canada.2
