He held the office of deputy-marshall at the time of the Salem witchcraft trials in 1692. His name continuously appears in town records, church records and deed records throughout his life at Salem.^5,6

• Abigail Manning is a possible daughter of John Manning. This based on the belief handed down through family history, that Jacob Brouwer and Abigail Manning's family originated in Dutchess County, New York. The Brouwer family to which Jacob belongs can be shown to have had a close association with the family of John Manning. It should be noted, however, that no documented evidence has been found that can demonstrate that John Manning had a daughter Abigail. Abigail is placed in this Dutchess County family of John Manning because it can be demonstrated that she is not a member of the families of Charles, Jacob, Joshua or Gabriel Manning (other contemporary Dutchess Co. Manning families) and yet she appears to have had her origins in Dutchess County, New York. With the information presently available it appears that Abigail would best fit into the family of John Manning. It is also noted that John's son, Joshua, married Lena Brouwer, sister to Abigail's husband, Jacob Brouwer.

• Nothing is known of John's youth, a time which may have, at least in part, been spent at Sheepscot, Maine. He is first found in Boston, where he settled and resided, following the family occupation of gunsmith, and later called, blacksmith. At Boston he was elected hogreeve in 1706; had the selectman view an "objectionable" kiln in 1709; and was "cautioned" by the selectman in 1711 (possibly something to have to do with a street ordinance). John was often in debt, and was unable to clear himself of it. He was sued several times between 1702 and 1723, and was once imprisoned. The record, however, indicates that he was an industrious individual who was unfortunate financially. Perhaps legal actions involving his father's Sheepscot land drained him financially. On 29 Aug 1706 he bought of John Atkinson of Newbury, Mass., a house and land in Boston, on the east side of "the land called Atkinson's Lane." The way was later called Long Lane, and is now a part of Federal St., between Milk and High Streets. On 13 Feb 1721 he was caused to mortgage it. The mortgage was removed on 3 Mar 1723, but later in the year execution was taken against his property and John was forced to sell on 12 Dec 1723 to George Cradock, a merchant and one of John's creditors. In 1721, John wrote his father regarding matters at Sheepscot, and mentions his wife has been "sick a twelve-month" and that small pox was "raging" in Boston. On 4 Dec 1719, Nicholas Manning conveyed to his son John, three thousand acres of land near "New Dartmouth" (Sheepscot), Maine. The deed was recorded on pages 69 and 70 of Eastern Deeds, and on folio 16 of the Book of Patents and Deeds, in the office of the Secretary of State in Boston. However, these were apparently destroyed in a fire in 1748, and this conveyance is only known by two deeds mentioned in York County, Maine deeds XII-184 and XX-163, whereby John, on 1 May 1721 sold 1500 acres to John Oulton and Cornelius Waldo, and then on 24 Aug 1724, sold 1500 acres to Job Lewis. In these deeds, John states that he acquired the land from his father, Nicholas Manning. After his wife's death, John contemplated marriage to Ann Mallet, and an intention for John Manning and Ann Mallet, widow, was published on 25 Jun 1724 in Boston, but the marriage was never carried out. She apparently cared for him in his illness and he left all of his property to her in his will dated 16 Jan 1726. John appointed Cornelius Waldo his executor, and inventory of his estate was taken 10 Apr 1727. No will for Ann Mallet has been found, and she is probably the Ann Mico who first married John Mallet on 26 Aug 1712.⁴
• No known children of John Manning have been found. None are mentioned in either Boston civil records or in any church records of his time (although John was not a member of any church). His will left all of his property to Ann Mallet, and does not mention descendants. Despite this evidence (or lack of) the William H. Manning, author of Manning Families of New England states, "Without an item of actual evidence to support the theory, the impression is strong with the compiler that John Manning did have children, and that in all probablity, they survived," and conjectures that they may have moved to New York to join their grandfather, Nicholas, and that lines may have continued in New York and Pennsylvania.⁵

• He studied medicine under his father and went into his own practice at the age of 20 at Newmarket, New Hampshire. After a year he returned to Ipswich, Massachusetts where he resided and practiced for the remainder of his life. At the age of 33, and after practicing for 12 years, he went to England to seek further medical education, and returned in 1772. At the Battle of Lexington on 19 Apr 1775, he attended to the wounded on both sides, British and American. Later in the war he served as surgeon at Newport, Rhode Island. He was an active buyer of property in Worcester Co., Massachusetts, Hillsborough Co., New Hampshire, and Cumberland Co., Maine. He was active in local politics in Ipswich and was an advocate for the poor, petitioning the town for an almshouse, but more often caring for the poor at his own expence. In 1792 he erected, what is probably, the first woolen mill in the country, at Ipswich. He was elected Representative from Ipswich in 1781-82, 1784, 1787, 1789-92, and 1794.⁴

His sons listed are David Manning who had 5 acres and 1 horse, he lived alone (unmarried); Abraham Manning had 1 acre, 1 horse, and was alone; John Manning, Jr (IV) had 2 acres, 1 cow and lived alone.⁷
• Ancestors and Descendants of Sarah Eleanor Ladue (p.88) places John in the family of Charles Manning. However, Charles claims another son, John L. Manning, based on the strength of the later naming a daughter Mehitable (the name of Charles Manning's [prob. second] wife). As he was born in 1765, this John is more likely the son of John Manning (b.1740) and would be too old to be placed in another Clinton, New York Manning family.

• John? Manning was probably born between 1700 and 1720.
• He is possibly the John? Manning who married Mercy On 20 Jan 1796, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported the death of "Mrs. Mercy Manning" age 78, of Clinton. Charles Manning (b.1743) named a daughter, Mercy. Gabriel Manning (b. by 1755) named a daughter Mary.¹

• Family tradition among the descendants of Jacob Manning (b.1745) believe his name was John Manning, and that he came from Smithtown, Long Island.²
• From the Odell Genealogy: "Martha Manning's father (name unknown) was said to be a descendant of Nicholas Manning, first chief of the Customs House of New York City. Tradition is that Martha's father came from Smithtown, Long Island to Dutchess Co., New York. He was buried in the church cemetery in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. which was destroyed to make room for the present court house which is on the corner of Market and Main streets. Market Street was the "Albany Post Road." This old cemetery was the churchyard of the Reformed Dutch Church and was called the "Poughkeepsie Cemetery." Nicholas Manning was living on Long Island 1721, aged 77, when he wrote to his son John. (John was b.1668 in Salem, Massachusetts, d.1726 at Boston).³
• Various user submitted databases and message boards found at Ancestry.com, RootsWeb and LDS Family Search claim the progenitor of the Clinton, New York Mannings as John Manning and Sarah Potter of Smithtown, Long Island. The claim has no basis in fact. John and Sarah (Potter) Manning both were born, lived, and died in Ipswich, Massachusetts. They are found in records there. Their children are well documented, and there is no evidence that they were ever at Smithtown or Dutchess County, New York. The possibility that John Manning and Sarah Potter are the progenitors of the Dutchess Co. line of Mannings, can only be possible, if there is a second couple named John and Sarah (Potter) Manning whose origins have yet to be discovered.
• Ancestors and Descendants of Sarah Eleanor Ladue (1930) claims the father of Charles Manning (b.1743) is also named Charles Manning and states that his wife was named Eleanor, and mentions that he is no where to be found in the records of Dutchess County, but that he was initially buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard, but was then removed to an unknown location when the city of Poughkeepsie developed the place. This genealogy asigns five sons to Charles Manning, namely John, Charles, Jacob, Thomas, and Joshua.⁴
• The above two references no doubt formed their ideas from William Henry Manning's The Manning Families of New England... (1902), who treats Charles Manning, as well as John and Joshua in the section titled "Miscellaneous Families: Manning Families Outside of New England." He does not offer a progenitor for the Manning group from Dutchess County, New York, but does raise the possibility, based upon the reoccurance of the names John, Jacob, Thomas and Richard, that their ancestry may be found through an unknown descendant of Capt. Nicholas Manning of Salem, Massachusetts, New Dartmouth, Maine, and late in his life, Staten Island, New York.⁵
• John? Manning may be a descendant of Nicholas Manning. Although only one of his children is known with certainty (son John, who lived in Massachusetts and did not leave descendants) it is probable that Capt. Nicholas Manning had other children by his second wife, Mary Mason, possibly born on Staten Island. In 1768, a Thomas Manning of Moreland, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, stating that he was an heir to the late John Mason (father of Nicholas's second wife, Mary Mason) petitioned the court at Suffolk Co., Massachusetts Bay seeking title to John Mason's land in Sheepscot, Lincoln Co. (now Maine). The petition, was signed by Attorney Nathaniel FitzRandolph acting as a substitute for Ephraim Manning, Attorney for Thomas Manning. Ephraim Manning, and the FitzRandolph family are in turn tied to the family and descendants of one Jeffrey Manning of New Jersey, who was originally in Massachusetts, and was an early settler of the area around Princeton, New Jersey. The FitzRandolph family and Capt. Nicholas Manning were both prominant in the settlement of the Sheepscot area of Maine. No doubt there is a connection between the families of Jeffrey Manning (MA to NJ) and Capt. Nicholas Manning (MA to ME to NY), and it is possible that the Manning family found in Dutchess County, New York during the second half of the 18th century will find their origins in one of these two lines.
• A John Manning appears on the tax list at Nine Partners/Crum Elbow Precinct from June 1769 until 1779, while a John Manning, Jr. appears on the same tax list from 1774 until 1779.⁶
• The Manning families of Ducthess County, New York are closely linked, through marriages and various legal documents to two seperate groups of other families. Charles Manning for certain, and probably John Manning are associated with the families of Brouwer, Callow, and Stoutenberg; familes whose origins are found in New York City. Martha, Jacob, Joshua, and Gabriel all show strong ties with the families of Wiltse, Odell, Derby (Darby) and Mott, all families who sent descendants north to Vermont and Canada around 1790.
  As the identity of the progenitor of the Manning families of Dutchess County as yet to be identified, his appearence here is to serve as a "placemark" of sorts, used to link the known heads of Dutchess Co. Manning families; all of whom may be siblings, or possibly close cousins, but are nonetheless of the same generation.
  The family of John? Manning, as shown here, should be considered as tentative, and used as a basis for additional research.
