Despite his occupation he was still elected to town offices in Salem; constable in 1736; tithingman in 1738; and juryman in 1744. His will names all of his children, of whom only one married. The remainder occupied his house after his death (later 95 Essex St., Salem).4

  • Ancestors and Descendants of Sarah Eleanor Ladue (1930) claims the father of Charles Manning (b.1743) is also named Charles Manning and states that his wife was named Eleanor, and mentions that he is no where to be found in the records of Dutchess County, but that he was initially buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard, but was then removed to an unknown location when the city of Poughkeepsie developed the place. This genealogy asigns five sons to Charles Manning, namely John, Charles, Jacob, Thomas, and Joshua.9
  • Charles Manning appears on the tax list at Nine Partners/Crum Elbow Precinct from June 1768 until 1779.10
  • Charles served in the Dutchess Co. Militia, 4th Regt., during the Revolutionary War, as did John, Gabriel, Thomas and Jacob Manning.11
  • On 18 July 1777, Charles Manning, Joshua Manning, and Jacob Manning were fined (£5, £3, and £1 respectively) for being delinquent in reporting for duty in the Company of Capt. Joseph Hagaman. The three, along with John Odell, Jacob Mott, Richard Mott, Albertus Schryver, and others were held as prisoners "before the Board" at which point they took the Oath of Allegiance to New York State, and were discharged.12
  • On 5 Jun 1786, Charles Manning appears on the tax list at Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York. He does not appear in 1787.13
  • On 3 Apr 1787 "Charles Manning of Clinton Precinct and Mehitabel his wife sold to Peter Scriver of the same place for £350 land scituate in Clinton Precinct aforesaid in the Great Nine Partners Pattent in Front of Water lott number 2 containing about 68 acres."
