b. before 1664, d. between 3 November 1706 and 3 October 1707
  • Also known as Johannes Van der Vort.2
  • Also known as Jean Le Fort.3
  • Alias Liberté.4
  • Jean Fort was a Frenchman and apparently came to the Albany area from New France (present day Quebec, Canada) in the 1670's or early 1680's, as a number of French Canadian families did. The reason for the move may have been do to religious restrictions impossed on Protestants by Catholic New France. He almost always signed his name as Jean Fort alias Liberté, or simply as Liberté, perhaps as an act of defiance to religious persecution.
  • On 10 June 1684, "Jean Forte, alias Liberté," was given by the administrators of Teunis Willemse Boots, deceased, a deed for a farm at Canastagione on the North Bank of the Mohawk (present day Clifton Park). It was for "all land and real estate which said Boots possessed in his lifetime at that place, together with house, barn, stacks, orchard, and lots, which said land has now been inhabited by said Liberté for three years."5
  • His will was dated on 3 November 1706 proved 3 Oct 1707, names his children Anna, Johannes, Abraham, Nicolas, Jacob, Mary, Daniel, and Isak.3
