Jan Corneliszen1

b. before 1625, d. between 1683 and 1687
  • Jan Corneliszen was born before 1625.
  • He married first before 1651 a wife (name unknown).2
  • Jan Corneliszen married second at New Amsterdam circa 1660 Janneken Pieters.2
  • Jan Corneliszen probably died between 1683 and 1687.
  • Also known as Jan Corneliszen Losee.1
  • Also known as Jan Corneliszen de Zeeuw.1
  • Jan Corneliszen, progenitor of the Losee family in America, immigrated to New Amsterdam in 1651, with a son, Cornelis, who in 1687, took the oath of allegiance at Bushwick, Long Island as Cornelis Leyse, and stated that he had been in this country for 36 years.1
  • The first record of Jan Corneliszen found in New Amsterdam is dated 22 Dec 1653, when he was named as a defendent in an action brought by Burger Joris regarding payment for a building which Jan Corneliszen had erected on land leased by him from the plaintiff. Jan is identified as the Jan Corneliszen de Zeeuw who in 1660 was one of twenty-two men selected by Gov. Peter Stuyvesant to establish the proposed settlement in the Mispat area of Long Island which became Boswick in 1661. He may have been one of the fourteen French petitioners to the Governor for lands to settle upon, many of whom were selected for the Boswick settlement. From 1660 until 1683, Jan Corneliszen is of frequent mention in the records of Bushwick, always called "Zeieuw" or some variant of, i.e. DeZeeuw, Zeeuw, Seew, Sew, Zeuw, etc. Because of the seemingly awkward time the early Dutch clerks had with recording Jan's name, it is believed he was not of Dutch origin, and was more probably French. All of his sons accepted the family name as Loyse, with all of its variant forms, with Losee being most commonly used. Jan Corneliszen is enlisted in the militia at Boswick in 1663; is both a plaintiff and defendant in court actions in 1663; is a member of the Justicees Court in 1665; was a contributor to the minister's salary in 1669; as town Constable in 1669. He is listed on the Bushwick tax lists in 1675 and 1676 as owning 34 acres. He appears on the Bushwick tax list of 1683 as taxable for no real estate, but for the nominal value of other property. He is not listed as a Bushwick freeholder in the Bushwick patent granted by Gov. Dongan in 1687, nor is he listed as taking the oath of allegiance in Bushwick (or anywhere else) in 1687. He was probably deceased by this date. The name of his first wife, whom he most certainly married in Europe and who would be the mother of his eldest son, is not known.1
