Over the past many years I have heard from at least 12 others who have claimed that this Jane Brouwer was the daughter of Sybrant
Brouwer and his wife Sara Webber- - Sybrant being the son of Jacobus Brouwer and Anna Bogardus. I had never confirmed this connection, of course, and had advised each one that this Jane was more likely in the line of descent from one of the other brothers of Jacobus - - probably Nicholas. When I received the abstracted data from the Supreme Court case I referred to in my e-mail of Feb. 25, 2007, Subj: "Family of Nicholas BROWER".. that was when I first learned that Nicholas and Jannetje Colyer had a son Nazareth - - and thus also the more complete family of Nicholas and Jannetje
as I had outlined. I do not know the dates of birth or baptism of the children of Nazareth Brouwer and Ann Rozell, except that of Cornelius who was born 9 Nov 1730, who married Mary Archer.
I can also advise that there is an excellent lineage from Nazareth Brower Hill and Catherine Edwards in Volume II - Part I, of "Loyalist Lineages of Canada", published by the Toronto Branch of The United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada, 1991, pp. 513-515. From the 12 other correspondents on the lines of descent from Thomas Benjamin Hill and Jane Brower, they had only indicated continuing descendants through their children Eleanor and Nazareth.". Nicholaes Brouwer1

b. between 1726 and 1730
  • Nicholaes Brouwer was probably born between 1726 and 1730.
  • He married Maria Boom, daughter of Johannes Boom and Anna Burger, at Reformed Dutch Church, Albany, New York, on 31 July 1757 "after 3 Banns Nicolaes Brouwer and Maria Boom, both of Albany County."2,3
  • Nicholas is possibly a son of Cornelis Brouwer and Hannah Hilton.
  • Nicholas Brower appears on the tax list of Albany City in 1767.4
  • Nicholaes Brouwer witnessed the baptism of Johannes Boom , son of Abraham Boom and Dorothea Cunningham, on 18 January 1767 at Reformed Dutch Church, Albany, New York, (sponsors Nicolaas Brouny, Marytje Boom).5
  • Nicholas Brower appears on the muster roll of Capt. Bernardus Bratt's Co., 1st Ward, City of Albany, on 20 Aug (presumably 1767).6
  • Although no birth or baptism record for Nicholas has been found, Hoffman in "Brouwer Beginnings" has placed Nicholas in the family of Jacob Brouwer and Maria Bovy, apparently based on his belief that he was named for Nicholas Bovy whom Hoffman supposed was Maria Bovy's father. Maria, however, is actually the daughter of Matthew Bovy and Catherina Barrois. Nicholas Brouwer was a contemporary in the Albany area with the families of the children of Jacob Brouwer and Maria Bovy, yet he does not appear as sponsor in any of that extended family's baptisms, nor do any of Jacob and Maria's children appear as sponsor for Nicholas's children. It is more probable that Nicholas is not a child of Jacob Brouwer and Maria Bovy. Of Nicholas's six known children, none have Brouwer family sponsors, an indication that either Nicholas, in the Albany area, was either far removed from his siblings, or more likely, that he was an only child or at least an only child who survived to adulthood. Of his first two sons and first two daughters, one of each is named for Nicholas' wife Maria Boom's parents (Johannes and Annatje or Anna). It then follows that the other two are likely named for Nicholas's parents. The first son (b.1757) is named Cornelis, indicating that Nicholas' father was Cornelis. However, Cornelis is not sponsored by his namesake. So perhaps Nicholas's father was deceased by 1757. The second daughter is actually named Maria (probably for her mother, Maria Boom), indicating that Annatje or Anna (the name of Nicholas' first daughter), was probably the name of not only Maria Boom's mother (as it is) but also of Nicholas' mother. Therefore we need to find a couple named Cornelis and Annatje (Anna or Hannah) both likely deceased by 1757, to fill the role of Nicholas's parents. Cornelis Brouwer and his wife Hannah (Anna) Hilton are the one couple who best fit the above facts. Having Hannah Hilton as a mother would also explain Nicholas' pressence in the Albany area as an adult. Hannah died at a young age, and Nicholas was most likely her only child. At the time they were living, young children who lost their mother generally did not remain with the newly widowed father. Instead they were taken in by members of the deceased mother's family. Nicholas was most likely taken in by either Hannah's parents or by one of her older siblings, perhaps her brother Pieter Hilton, who appears as a sponsor for two of Nicholas and Maria (Boom) Brouwer's children. All of these families remained in the Albany area and Nicholas is found living in close proximity to them as an adult. Sponsors for the baptisms of his children all come from either the Boom family, or from the Hilton family and their related families. It is probable that Nicholas, previously unconvincingly placed in the Brouwer family, was a son of Cornelis Brouwer and Hannah Hilton.7

  7. [S1308] William Bogardus, "Re: Nicholas Brower Info," e-mail message from Bogardus, William (unknown address) to Chris Chester, Paul Brewer, Perry Brewer and et al, 9 Jan 2007, "In the manuscript notes of "Brouwer Beginnings" by William J. Hoffman that I referred to earlier as being at the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, he placed Nicholas Brouwer who married Maria Boom as a son of Jacob Brouwer and Maria Bovy primarily based on two factors: although there was no record of a baptism, he indicated that Nicholas was named for his Uncle Nicholas Bovy; and he and members of his family are buried in the same plot in the Albany Dutch Reformed Church Burying Ground
as that of Hessel Brouwer and his wife Lena Wessels and their family - - Hessel being a son Jacob's older brother Uldrick Brouwer and probably his second wife, Adriaentje Pieters. Truthfully, I too feel a little uncomfortable about this but Hoffman was very meticulous in his work and I have rarely, if ever, found much of his work to be in error - - although some families not as complete as I have been able to identify. I'm sure he did not have all the sources as readily available to him then as we do today, however."
I would add that in his manuscript notes, Hoffman writes, that Gerrit Brouwer is "bur. Albany Dutch Ref. Burying Ground in the same plot with the family of Nicolaes Brouwer and Marietje Boom, which is a proof of the connection of these families." And I add that the Gerrit Brouwer buried in this Burying Ground is the son of Hessel Brouwer and Lena Wessels, and is not a member of the Jacob Brouwer and Maria Bovey family.. The indenture also describes the other properties that Abraham and Nicholas Brower jointy purchased, including the property purchased from Gerardus Beeckman and his wife Magdalena, and then states that "one half of all the ptoperty in the deeds mentioned is property of Abram Brower and the other equal half property of Nicholas Brower. • Mill property of Nicholas Brouwer was brought up in law suits lasting until as late as 1853 before the U.S. Supreme Court. In Cornelius D. Thorp v. Ardel B. Raymond, the property mentioned is decribed as a "mill seat and the erections thereon, together with some eighteen acres of land, situate on the River Bronx in the Town and County of Westchester." It is stated that he owned the property in 1726, and continued to do so until fis death in 1749.37
  • Nicholaes Brouwer, his family and some of his descendants are covered by Hoffman in "Brouwer Beginnings," TAG 24:161-169. He and his wife last appear in any record on a deed dated 1 April 1726. No death or burial record, nor a will, has been discovered for either of them. In 1691 Nicholas Brouwer, from Kings County, was among the fusiliers raised for the defense of Albany. He served in Capt. Bradshaw's Company. April 1, 1726, Mary Sinclair bought from Nicholas Brouwer and Jannetje his wife, a lot in the East Ward of the City of New York (NYG&BR 10:176; NYHS, Wills 3:218). Hoffman is clear in making mention that the accounts of the children of Nicholas Brouwer and Jannetje Caljer, in published accounts and manuscripts prior to his "Brouwer Beginnings" articles, is "full of errors...mainly because of the desire to make their descendants eligible to claim the renowned Anneke Jans as an ancestress." (See under Nicholas's son Adolphus).38
  • A manuscript of family genealogies in the Collection of Helen Wilkinson Reynolds mentions that Nicholas Brouwer had six daughters, "one by the name of Jain - she married a RYER and another Caty - she married HUF. Lany married FRADENBOAG (that would be Magdalena who married Joost Vredenburgh) - Elizabeth married Parrsels (Lysbet married John Parsell) - Hana mared Dan ___." The manuscript further states that Jain (Jane) and her husband RYER were the parents of Jane RYER (Ryder) who then married Charles Brower. In light of this, there may be an additional three daughters, Jane, Caty, and Hannah, of Nicholas and Jannetje (Caljer) Brouwer who have yet been accounted for. More evidence of their existance is sought.39

The mill pond was formed by damming off a branch of the Gowanus Kill, the privilege for which Nicholas had asked in a petition dated 28 May 1709. According to Hoffman, the mill was located on the north-east side of "the present First Street, about midway between Second and Third Avenues," and that it later became known as Denton's Mill. On 28 March 1704, a new highway to Gowanus Kill was laid out, to start at "Lefferts Petersens ffence along the lands of Abraham Brower and Nicholas Brower to Jurian Collier to the new mill of Nicholas Brouwer, sett upon Gowanus neck." In several deeds Nicholas is called, "of Gowanus," but on the 1698 census of Kings County he is recorded in Boswyk (Bushwick) with a family of 1 male, 1 female and 3 children (the children would be Nazareth, Adolphus and Magdalena). In 1719 he is "of Fordham Manor." Hoffman briefly lists the following deeds: Oct. 10, 1700, between Pieter Brouwer of East New Jersey and Abraham and Nicholas Brouwer of Brookland, Gowanus, property formerly owned by Adam Brouwer, deceased. Pieter is called the oldest son of Adam. Oct. 30, 1701, between G. Beekman of Flatbush and Abraham and Nicholas Brouwer of Gowanus. Dec. 20, 1705 between John Bennen of Flatbush and Nicholas Brouwer of Brookland. Aug. 10, 1706 between Abraham Brouwer of Gowanus and Nicholas Brouwer his brother and partner. Peter Brouwer, eldest son of Adam, is mentioned. April 30, 1707 between Sybrandt Brouwer of Brookland eldest son of Jacob deceased and Abraham and Nicholas Brouwer, involving property formerly belonging to Adam Brouwer. Oct. 12, 1712 (NY Cal. of Land Papers, vol.5, also May 1), petition of Sebringh (Sybrandt) Brewer "owner of half a hook of land lying at a place called Gowanus, in ye township of Brookland in Kings County for a warretn, to survey and lay out ye limits of said land, according to his antient patent and conveyances thereof; as likewise the land of Nicholas Brewer adjoining thereto and such other of the adjacent patents as may be necessary to demonstrate the petitioner's claim mabe thereon.". Nicholas Brouwer1

b. 16 March 1707
  • Nicholas Brouwer was baptized on 16 March 1707 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, witnesses Joris Homs, Lena Douscon.2
  • No further record (according to Hoffman in "Brouwer Beginnings" [TAG 24:165]).1
  • Possibly went to North Carolina??? This being the statement of a descendant of (his father) Nicholas Brouwer made in the later half of the 1800s. There was a Nicholas Brower in North Carolina, however, he was likely a descendant of Hubert Brower who came to Philadelphia in the early 1700s.3
  • Grenville Mackenzie in his unpublished manuscript, "Families of the Colonial Manor of Philipsburgh," writes that Nicholas, "b. Brooklyn, 1707, removed as a child to Fordham Manor; apparently was the Brouwer who lived in Mile Square, Yonkers, and had sons William, b. 1738, mar. 1760, Elizabeth Dutcher, (and) Dennis, mar. Anne Fowler.4
  • William Brouwer is claimed as a son of Nicholas Brouwer by Grenville Mackenzie. It is possible, as William's daughter Rachel was said to be born in what is present day Saratoga Co., New York. A Nicholas Brower/Brewer appears at Newtown (now in present day Saratoga Co.) in the years prior to and during the Revolutionary War.4
  • Dennis Brewer is claimed as a son of Nicholas Brouwer by Grenville Mackenzie. This has not been confirmed.4
