John J. Brewer1

b. circa September 1790, d. 20 March 1848
  • John J. Brewer was born circa September 1790 at New Jersey.1
  • He married Elizabeth Waters circa 1815.1
  • John J. Brewer died on 20 March 1848 at Williamson, Wayne Co., New York; "age 57 yrs., 6 mos." (g.s.).1
  • He was buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Pultneyville, Wayne Co., New York.1
  • It is presummed that John J. Brewer came to Wayne Co., New York from New Jersey in about 1830. While his four eldest children were all said to be born in New Jersey, his youngest son, Aaron, was born in 1831, apprently in Wayne Co., New York. A search of the 1830 census finds no John Brewers (or Browers) in Wayne Co. in 1830. In 1830, in New Jersey, there are eight John Brewers or Browers. Three deserved to be described: John Brower, of Bergen, Bergen Co., New Jersey with a household of 1 male 15-20, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 15-20; John Brower of Caldwell, Essex Co., New Jersey with a household of 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 3 females under 5, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40; John Brewer, Junr. of Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, with a household of 1 male under 5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-30. Of the three, the last one best describes the possible family of this John J. Brewer. Although the ages for the two adults appear to be understated, the middle initial J. likely stands for the name of John's father, which is likely to be, John. The third John Brewer mentioned in a "John Brewer, Jnr." A "H.John Brewer, Sr." is also enumerated on this census sheet as are a James Brewer, Richard Brewer, Jonathan Brewer. The sheet is alphabetized, and listed also are Nathaniel Britton and Richard Britton (note that John J. Brewer has a son named "Britton Brewer").2,3,4
  • He appeared on the census in 1840 at Williamson, Wayne Co., New York, as John J. Brewer with a household of 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 40-50.5
  • DNA testing of a descendant of John J. Brewer demonstrates that John J. Brewer is a descendant of Jan Brouwer however, John J. Brewer's direct ancestry back to Jan Brouwer has not been discovered.6

"He reportedly died in 1876 in Denton, Denton County, Texas, but no documentation has been found to substantiate this fact. However, he must have come to Texas, as he wrote a lengthy poem entitled "Land of North Texas," which was published in the Daily Tribune, Terrell, Texas (date unknown). The poem was written in 1867 and sent to his brother, Aaron Henry Brewer, who later lived in Terrell.

In August 1864, he was working in North Carolina. (Source: Letter from Jane Brewer to her brother, Aaron Henry Brewer, dated August 9, 1864) He worked in the Commissary at Richmond during the Civil War, and was captured by the Yankees in late 1864 or early 1865, but escaped. He spent the night in a swamp up to his ankles in mud and water. He lost all his clothing, bed and bedding. He managed to get another suit of clothes and one blanket. (Source: Letter from Jane Brewer to her brother, Aaron Henry Brewer, dated January 30, 1865) John W. Brewer taught school for two years after the Civil War at Pine Grove in Coosa County, Alabama.
