Smith Downey Papers as found in Duke University Library.
also found in NC State Archives Superior Court Cases of Granville County. Case Richard Smith vs Samuel P. Downey.
Sometimes previous to 1842 Miss Ann Smith loaned one thousand dollars to Dr. James Young and his brother Henry. Miss Ann Smith, first cousin of John Young, father of Dr. James and Henry Young, decided to not press for the payment of the debt. In 1842, Ann A. Smith, the sister-in-law of Miss Ann Smith said in a deposition .was asked "Was not James and Henry Young related to Miss Ann Smith and looked upon as particular friends?" She replied, "They were. Dr. James Young had always been her physician."
This is corroborating evidence that Miss Ann Smith was a cousin to John Young.
