William White, Jr

Like his father William White, Sr., William White, Jr. seems to have been a feltmaker/hatmaker in the city of New York.  In 1698 both William White and William White, Junr. were being made Freemen in New York: William White, Hattmaker on Aug 23, 1698 and William White, Junr, Feltmaker on Sept 6, 1698. (1)

He took in an apprentice in 1701 promising to see that he was taught to write and do arithmetic. (2)  The tax list of 1703 for Dock Ward, New York City, named William White, Jr. with 2 males in his household and one female and no children. (3) Thus we know that neither Abigail White nor John White were children of this William White, Jr. (4)

On Jan 20, 1709 there was a deed of William White feltmaker of NY City and Elizabeth his wife to John Harperdincke. "dwelling house and Lott lying within the said City of New York fronting on the North to Princess Street " (5) (Princess St was in Dock Ward.)

The last record found for William White, Jr. was in a deed recorded in 1714.  Apparently the land had been purchased on 10 Jul 1712 just a couple of months before his father was buried on 6 Sep 1712. The deed recorded George Allen of Freehold, blacksmith, for 30 pounds deeding land to William White of New York City, feltmaker.   The land was in Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., NJ  "on a brook that runs down to the Iron Works" and bordered on the east by Prudence Lining.  (6)  By looking at all the deeds for this land, it looks like their lands were at the intersection of Pine Brook and what is now known as Swimming River. (6) This area was only about 4 miles from Little Silver where his presumed uncle, Peter White, was living. (7)

There was another William White in Freehold who was buying land.  He signed his name with an X and was married to a Sarah. (8)  The William White of this page signed the deeds in Jamaica and was teaching his indentured apprentice to read and write.

Abigail White was born 20 Ju 1697 well before  1703 when William White, Jr. was recorded as having no children, and later John White is shown in land records as living on land connecting to his father's land.

In 1725 when a neighbor's land was being surveyed, the surveyor referred to markers showing the boundaries of the cleared land of Peter White and John White. These markers are only a quarter mile from each other.

East Jersey deed BK D-2 pg 194

The "stake" is on the boundary of John White.  The "green birch" is the boundary for the land of Peter White's cleared land. The two markers are a quarter of a mile apart. In later documents it become apparent their lands were once part of the same tract.

Recollections of Margaret White Geary from "Ancestors of Kentucky" Volume 5 page 82.
Margaret White Geary was born 20 May 1770, daughter of Peter White and Margaret Stull White. Her grandfather was John White, sister to Abigail White Bainbridge. (John and Abigail were children of Peter White, son of this William White) In 1846 her son, Rev. Edward Ratchford Geary wrote ass follows:   "John, William, Peter and Abigail White constituted the family of my mother's great grandfather whose name is not recollected.  Their residence was Shrewsbury, New Jersey.  William and Peter never married.  Abigail married "Peter" Bainbridge and was the mother of John, Edmond, Peter and Absolom Bainbridge."

Presumed map of where William White, Jr., living in Shrewsbury
The deed recorded that he was bordered on the east by Prudence Lining, on the north by Lewis Morris and on the west by Thomas Wainwright.
Both of the deeds, for William White Jr and for Prudence Lining, indicate that their northern boundary was a brook that ran down to the Iron Works.
The deeds for the land of Prudence Lining indicate that her eastern border was "Pine Brook" and that her northern border was "Tinton Brook."

William White Jr and Prudence Lining

(7) Map of Tinton Falls.
It is not known where precisely the Iron Works were located, but they were on a line down from Middletown to Shrewsbury.
At the top right hand corner of the yellow section of Tinton Falls is the intersection of two rivers.  The Swimming River is flowing from south to northeast across the top of the yellow section until is joined by the Pine Brook river which flows from south to north.  From the description of the land records, it is assumed William White, Jr. lived north of Tinton Falls at the junction of these two rivers which was about 4 miles from LIttle Silver where his presumed Uncle Peter White was living.
