Isaac Stull White, son of Peter White and Margaret Stull, was born about 1772 in Frederick (present-day Washington) County, MD.  He was probably first married May 19, 1806 at Zion Reformed Church (63) at Hagerstown, MD to Mary Grove.  She apparently died young without surviving issue.

Isaac S. White was married a second time on Sep. 26, 1809 at Zion Reformed Church at Hagerstown, MD to Mary M. Rench, daughter of Jacob Rench (64) and Margaret Young (65)  Mary was born in 1791.  The Maryland Herald and Hagers-Town Weekly Advertiser noted on Saturday, Sep. 27, 1809:

Married on Thursday evening last by the Rev. Mr. Rauhauser, Isaac S. White, Esq. Sheriff, to Miss Mary Rench, daughter of Mr. Jacob Rench of Washington county.

They had at least nine children, all probably born at Hagerstown, MD except # 2 and #3 who were probably born in VA. (66)

  1. Jacob Rench White, b. June 21, 1810 (67) He was married Dec. 24, 1833 at Mercersburg, PA (68) to Jane D. Cowan. (69) Jacob R. White was living at Philadephia, PA in 1846.
2. Druzilla M. White, b. abt 1812.  She died young, probably before 1820, and was buried in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery. (70)
3. (child) White, b. abt 1814. (71) This child apparently died young, before 1820, and was buried in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery.
4. Temperance Adeline White, b. Apr. 9, 1816. (72) She apparently died young, before 1820, and was buried in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery.
5. Isaac Stull White, Jr., b. Nov 6, 1817. (73) He died Jan. 28, 1834 at Hagerstown, MD. The Torch Light and Public Advertiser, Hagerstown, reported on Jan. 30, 1834: 'Died on Tuesday evening, last at the residence of Mr. Rickenbaugh, in ths town, Isaac Stull White in the 17th year of his age son of Isaac S. White Esq. of this county.  The deceased was a yough of great promise.' He was buried in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery at Hagerstown. (74)
6. Daniel Stull White, b. abt. 1819.  He married Elizabeth C. Doll.
7. (child) White, b. abt. 1821.  This child died young and was buried in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery.
8. Samuel Nigh White, b. Sep. 9, 1823. (75) He was living in Berkeley County, (W)VA in 1846.
9. Cornelius E. White, b. Aug. 18, 1826. (76) By Apr. 10, 1847, Thomas F. Purnell of Marion County, IN had been appointed guardian ad litem of Cornelius White.  Cornelius apparently never married.  He died Oct. 29, 1864 and was buried in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD

Isaac S. White was co-inheritor with his brother, Peter White, Jr., of all but eleven acres of 'End of Strife' farm between Hagerstown and Funkstown, MD, with restrictions for his mother's life use.  He sold his portion of 'End of Strife' to his sister and brother-in-law, John and Sarah Wagoner on Dec. 15, 1807 for 1,515 pounds. (77)

As a young man Isaac White began a public career.  On Sep. 5, 1805 the following advertisement appeared in the Maryland Advocate and Hagers-
Town Weekly Advertiser
.

Encourage(d) by a number of respectable characters of this County, I take the liberty, in this manner, to offering myself as a Candidate for the Sheriff's Office, at the next Election.

On Sep. 5, 1805, Isaac S. White ran the following advertisement in Hagerstown paper: 'Encouraged by a number of respectable characters of this County, I take the liberty, in this manner, to offering myself as a Candidate for the Sheriff's Office, at the next Election.' He won this election and served as sheriff from 1806 to 1810.

Isaac S. White bought a property called 'Wolf Spring' on Oct. 4, 1806. He was elected sheriff of Washington County in the latter part of that year. (78)  It appears that after 1810 he removed to Virginia for a time, returning to Maryland and recording the following on Sep. 15, 1817. (79)

I hereby certify that having moved from the state of Virginia on the 8th day of August 1817 into the state of Maryland, together with my household furniture I brought a negro man named Abraham about twenty two years of age, not for sale with a bona fide intention of becoming a resident of the state of Maryland.  Given under my hand this 15th day of September 1817.    Isaac S. White

Isaac Stull White purchased land from the executors of the estate of Rev. George Bower on Sep. 22, 1817. (80)  On June 21, 1817 he purchased almost 97 acres of land in Westmoreland County, PA from the estate of Richard Williams, Esq. (81) Presumably he sold this property to his older brother, John White.

Isaac Stull White was living in the 1st Electorate District of Washington County, MD in 1820 and on Sep. 19, 1820 again offered himself 'to your consideration as candidate for the next Sheriffalty', but was defeated by his first cousin, John V. Swearingen.  However, White was again elected in 1821.  In Oct. of 1824 he was a candidate for the Maryland General Assembly and elected for a one-year term.

Isaac S. White was co-executor with Daniel Schnebly of the estaste of their father-in-law, Jacob Rench.  Rench's estate was settled Oct. 14, 1820 and totalled more than $55,000.  The estate remained unsettled many years and a chancery suit was filed by the heirs in 1846 (82)

Isaac S. White was present in Jan. of 1820 at the meeting to form the Episcopal Society at Sharpsburg. ((83) He and his family were living in the 1st Election District, Washington County, MD in 1820. (84)  The last mention of him found in Washington County land records was the recording of a bill dated Jan 2, 1831 for the sale of one large church bell to Jacob Mumma 'now in St. Paul's Church in the Town of Sharpsburg,' delivered for $280.00. (85)

Mary M. White died on Saturday Oct. 17, 1835 near Hagerstown.  Her death notice in the Oct. 24, 1835 Republican Banner, noted:

Departed this life on Saturday evening last in the 46th year of her age, Mrs. Mary M. White, consort of Isaac S. White, Esq. of this county.  The deceased was a most estimable lady.

Isaac Stull White thereafter went to Mercersburg, PA, probably to live with his eldest son.  He died Mar. 9, 1843 at Martinsburg, (W)VA, probably at the home of his younger son Daniel.  The Martinsburg Gazette reported on Thursday, Mar. 13, 1845:

Died - On Sunday morning last, in the town, Isaac S White, aged 73 years, formerly of Mercersburg, PA

Isaac's body was returned to Hagerstown where he was buried beside his wife and several children in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery. (86)

Footnotes

(63)  It is almost certain this was the first marriage for Isaac S. White, even though his sister did not mention a first marriage for him in her 1840 reminiscences of the family.  Isaac White and Mary Grove were married by Rev. Jonathan Rauhauser who was a pastor of Zion Reformed Church 1792-1817.  Rauhauser later performed the married of Isaac Stull White and his second wife and they were member of this church and buried in its churchyard.

(64) Jacob Rench was born Sep. 7, 1760, son of John Rench (c. 1726-Nov. 11, 1794) and Margaret Muller (c. 1731-Apr 30, 1806).  Jacob died July 15, 1811.  His estate was administered by Daniel H. Schnebly and Isaac S. White.  The estate totalled $53, 629.51 and Mary (Rench) White was mentioned as Jacob Rench's daughter. (Washington County, MD Distribution of Estate Books, 1806-1816, by Dale W. Morrow & Deborah Jensen Morrow, Vol. 3, #233).

(65) Margaret (Young) Rench died Nov. 2, 1846.

(66) According to the 1840 reminiscences of his sister, Margaret (White) Geary, Isaac and Mary White 'had a large family, several who died as infants.'

(67) Jacob was baptized Oct. 16, 1810 at Zion Reformed Church at Hagerstown.  His mother's name was listed as 'Anamaria'. His birth date was given in the baptismal record.

(68) The Torch Light and Public Advertiser reported on Jan. 2, 1834: 'Married in Mercersburg, Pa. on the 24th ult. by the Rev. Mr. Creigh, Mr. Jacob R. White to Miss Jane D. Cowen, both of that place.'

(69) She is probably the Jane Cowan, daughter of Hugh Cowan, who was baptized Nov. 12, 1809 at the Upper West Concocheague Presbyterian Church at Mercersburg, Franklin County, PA.  Hugh Cowan was living in Warren Township, Franklin County, PA when the 1810 census was taken.

(70) Her stone has no dates, but her sandstone tombstone is an earlier style that those of other family members, so she probably died as an infant or young child.  She cannot be placed as a child in the Isaac White family in the 1820 census and was presumable dead by then.

(71) There are three small marble stones who inscriptions are no longer readable for infant White children near and in addition to Druzilla, Cornelius and Isaac S. White, Jr.  Apparently all died as infants or very young.

(72) She was baptized Feb. 1818 as 'Temperence Adilain' White at St. John's Evangelical Church at Hagerstown.  Her birth date was given in the baptismal record.

(73) Isaac was baptiazed in Feb., 1818 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Hagerstown.  His birth date was given in the baptismal record.

(74) Isaac Jr.'s tombstone in Zion reformed Cemetery has been mistakenly read 1836-1852.  His correct dates of 1817-1834 have been confirmed from primary sources.

(75) Samuel was baptized in Nov., 1823 at St. John's Evangelical Church at Hagerstown.  His birth date was given in the baptismal record.

(76) Cornelius was baptized Apr. 6, 1836 at the age of nearly 10 at Zion Reformed Church at Hagerstown.  His mother's name was listed as 'Mary M.' in the baptismal record and his birth date was recorded there.

(77) Land records of Washington County, MD, Bk. S, p. 990.

(78) On Nov. 8, 1806, Otho H. William and Nathaniel Rochester posted bond of 10,000 pounds for 'Isaac Stull White' as sheriff.

(79) Land records of Washington County, MD, Bk. CC, p. 219.

(80)  Land records of Washington County, MD, Bk. CC, p. 219.  For $2,000 Isaac S. White purchased house lot #202 and one half of house lot #201 in Hagerstown.  Although a deed showing White's disposal of this land was not found, it does not appear he owned this or any other property at the time of his death.

(81) Isaac S. White paid $450 to Richard Williams during Williams' lifetime and another $116.19 to his heirs after Williams' death. (Westmoreland County, PA land records, Bk. 12, pp. 425-426).

(82) An equity suit was filed in Washington county, MD in Nov. 1846 between the heirs of Jacob Rench including the surviving heirs of Mary (Rench)White. (Equity Court records of Washington County, MD, case # 945). This case gave detailed records of the heirs of Jacob Rench.  In March Term, 1848, there were only four surviving heirs of Mary (Rench) White and each received $91.96 1/4 - a total of $367.85.  The heirs were Daniel S., Jacob R., Samuel N., and Cornelius White.

(83) Reported in The torch Light and Public Advertiser, Hagerstown, June , 1820.

(84) 1820 federal census of the Election District, Washington County, MD p. 62. He was listed as over 45 and his wife is 26 to 45.  Living in their home were a female 14 to 26 and a male 26 to 45 who mut have been servants.  Their only living children at the time was one male under 10 and one male 10 to 16.

(85) Land records of Washington County, MD, Bk. MM, p. 141.

(86) Isaac's tombstone says Isaac S. White, Sr., died 1844 age 73 y, but his death year on this stone is incorrect.  Mary White's tombstone gives her birth deate as 1791 and her death as Oct., 1835."
