- When Rebecca Low, widow of William Verbryck,
applied for a widow's pension in 1837, they tore out a page of the
family bible (seen at left) to prove her marriage to William
Verbryck. We do not speak Dutch, but we do think this side of the
bible page says in the year 1777 March 20 William Verbryck 39
marries with Rebecca Low 20 years. Then it says 1778 6 of January a
daughter is born on a Tuesday --- named Dorete. Then 1779 17 of July
--- a daughter named Rebecca. If anyone can translate this Dutch
please contact us. The other side of this bible page has some death
records.

In 1836 Dorothy DeMott Verbryck gave testimony
for her mother's application for a Revolutionary War Pension.
She"states that she is the oldest child of William verbryck & Rebecca
his wife. She was born as the family register shows, the 6th of
January 1778 in Somerset County, New Jersey and has resided in Kentucky
ever since her nineteenth year. She was married to Lawrence Demott
(who has since died) in February 1798. There were thirteen
children altogether, eleven of whom only were raised.
Witness has examined the memorandum from a book and referred to by her
mother in her declaraton and has no doubt of its being the hand writing
of her father William Verbryck. She means that portion of it which
gives the time of her parents marriage & the births of some of their
children. Her mother has remained a widow ever since the death of
her father who died in this county the 31st of January 1824.
And further this deponent saith not.

Depostion of Dorothy Verbryck Demott as found in the Revolutionary War
Application for her mother Rebecca Verbryck W8799 |
From the above testimony we know Dorothy was in Mercer Co., KY from about
1797 and she married Lawrence DeMott in Mercer Co., KY in 1798 when she was 20
even though her half-brother, Lawrence Verbryck,
testifies that she is 21. Her parents were still in New Jersey. Her
mother, in her depostion, says they came to KY in 18?? and William Verbryck is
still paying taxes back in New Jersey in 1801
