"# 52 Freeman Upson (Asa, Thomas, Stephen, Thomas). Born December 20, 1751, Southington or Bristol.  Died May 1802, as sea aboard U. S Frigate Essex, in the Mediterranean Sea.  Married (1) Lois ----.  She born 1752. Died December 9, 1774, buried in North Cemetery, Bristol.  Married (2) January 5, 1776, Roxbury, Mass., Mary, daughter of Thomas and Deborah (Parker) Cheney.  She born January 10, 1753, Roxbury, Mass.  Died April 6, 1816, Bristol, and buried in North Cemetery.

Freeman, called Freemund in land records, and Truman in church records and elsewhere, is not to be confused with Freeman, son of Joseph, a contemporary, nor Truman, son of John.  Freeman Upson's father, Captain Asa, was so closely identified with Southington in the year following his marriage that it is difficult to say whether Freeman could claim that town or Bristol as his birthplace.  He was educated in the Bristol school.  In 1779, Southington was separated from Farmington and in the confusion some Revolutionary records were lost; but there is a tradition that Freeman served in the navy for a while and his name appears on the Southington Honor Roll monument.  His wife Mary joined the First Congregational Church of Bristol, February 11, 1776, by letter from Roxbury, Mass.  Freeman served on church, town and school committees from 1777 to 1800.  Between October 18, 1792 and May 1800, his children were baptized, their names not being reported.  On January 11, 1800, he enlisted as a private in the U. S. Marine Corps at New London.  His will was probated 1803 and his estate distributed to his wife Mary, and to his children.
