"#54. Asa Upson (Asa, Thomas, Stephen, Thomas). Born 1755, Bristol.
Died November 29, 1826, Bristol, and buried in North Cemetery, with his wife and
some of his children. Married January 21, 1788, Worthington (now Berlin),
Ruth, daughter of Jedediah and Acsaph (Norton) Norton. She born 1765,
Berlin. Died September 29, 1837, Bristol.
Asa Upson was in the Revolutionary
War, and a copy of his honorable discharge from military service is in the hands
of his descendants, the Carringtons of Bristol. he was a farmer, and owned
large tracts of land in Bristol. Papers, which he left, show that he was a
constable in Bristol during the years 1794-1797, and in 1802 and 1808. He
was also collector of state taxes during the years 1808-1809. His will,
dated 1823 (he also made one in 1815), mentions his wife, Ruth Upson, daughters
Ruth Pardee and Sophia N. Barnes and son Rensselaer Upson. Several of Asa
Upson's letters show that he was interested in politics and was alert and active
until the time of his death.
Asa's wife, Ruth Norton, was a descendant of
Thomas Norton, who came from England to Guilford in 1639. She was admitted
to the Congregational Church of Bristol on April 8, 1816.
