According to the biography on her grandson, Stout Barklow" in the Portsmouth
Times Nov 27, 1886
"Stout Barklow was born February 15, 1822, on Tygart, in Greenup county, Ky.,
near the old Enterprise Furnace. He comes from revolutionary stock on both
sides. His grandmother on the paternal side was Ruth Stout, was born and
raised at Princeton, New Jersey, and heard the thunder of Washington’s guns when
he routed the British, from that now classic village. When our subject was a boy
he often heard his grandmother relate the circumstance." See complete
biography on page for Stout St. Leger Barklow
_____
After the death of her husband, Ruth was living close to her son Edward in Greenup
Co. She and Edward are listed next to each other in the 1810 census,
Greenup Co., no township listed. Her daughter, Susannah, married John Hannahs in
1812. Ruth gave permission to wed, signing as mother of Susannah. (see
page for Susannah Barklow) By 1820 the
families of both John Hannahs and Ruth Barkelow with two teenage sons are still
in Greenup Co., but Edward had moved to Portsmouth where job opportunities in
iron ore quarries and smelting furnaces were developing.
In 1830 John Hannahs was still in Greenup and Ruth was also in Greenup Co.,
living with her youngest son, Stout. The biography on the Hannahs triplets
indicates the family moved to Portsmouth around 1830 when the "triplets were in
their infancy." Then, according to the DAR applications of Mrs Agnes Barklow Roe and Alice Etna Barkow Wilson, Ruth died in 1837. John
Hannahs must have died sometime around then too, because by 1840, Susannah is in Portsmouth, Scioto Co., OH and is a young widow with several children.
Susannah died in 1843, leaving her children as orphans. Her brother Edward had
moved on to Licking Co., OH. Her brother Stout had been in Lewis Co., KY in 1840
but may have moved to Portsmouth around this time. He is listed in
Portsmouth in the 1850 census. When Susannah died, her oldest daughter,
Ruth, was 27 and must have taken over the raising
of the younger children. It was probably Ruth who cut out the clippings of the
obituaries on Susannah Barklow Hannahs which were found in the scrapbook passed
down to Susannah's great granddaughter, Grace Shepard.
In the Greenlawn Cemetery where Susannah Hannahs is buried, there is a marker
for Ida E Barklow right next to the one for Susannah.
