Simeon B Spillman

According to his obituary, Simeon came to Indiana around 1838 when he was about 14. His parents had been in and out of the courts of Scott Co., KY.  His father was declared a pauper in March of 1831.  His mother took his father to court in Dec of 1832 trying to get him declared not the legal guardian for his children.  The case was dismissed in Jan of 1832.  In June of 1833 his younger brother was born.  His mother seems to have remarried in Feb 1838 just about the time when Simeon moved to Indiana.  The Scott Co., courthouse burned down around 1835 so there are no records of exactly what happened.  And there is no record of where any of them were in 1840, but Simeon married in Indiana in 1846 and his sister Martha married in Indiana in 1845.

All three siblings must have gone to Missouri around 1855.  Simeon is buying land in Daviess Co., MO in 1855.  His brother Robert H. Spillman is listed in a court suit in Daviess Co., MO in 1858.  His sister Martha's third child was born in Indiana in 1854 but the next child was born in Missouri.

In 1860, however, Simeon returned to Indiana and is listed in the 1860 census for Johnson County, IN,  with a worth of $1000 of real estate and $600 personal worth and Sarah's father, Garrett Brewer age 77, is living with the family. In the 1870 census for Johnson County, Simeon is a farmer who has over $2000 in real estate and $1155 in personal wealth.

Martha Yarbrough and Robert H. Spillman remained in Missouri.  They are living next to each other in the 1860 census for Clay Co., MO

Mary, the daughter of Simeon and Sarah, married Susan Power's older brother, Isaac Powers.   Sarah married a Murray and Silvia a Murray. Sarah Brewer died November 1870 and but Simeon married a second time to Emily F. Wishard on Sept 14, 1871. They had one child: Robert G. born 1872.

Simeon died at age 68 of Cerebral Hemorrhage on May 7, 1893. The death certificate was signed by J. M. Wishard. Parents of Simeon are listed as father, William Spillman born in Maryland and mother, Sarah Deering born in Kentucky.

Simeon appears to have named many of his children after family members.  His brother-in-law was David E. Yarbrough.  He had an uncle Grandison Deering.  His father was named William Spillman  His mother was named Sarah Deering.  His sister was named Martha.  And his brother was named Robert.
