D.E. Yarbrough Dead - David E. Yarbrough died at his home in Dewitt at2:00 Monday December 7, 1908, at the age of 83 years, 9 months, and 14days. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church in this city by Rev. Robert Seabough Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock after which he remains were taken in charge by the Masonic Lodge and buried in Evergreen Cemetery with the full honors of the fraternity. The subject of this sketch was a native of the state of Kentucky having been born in Henry County, Kentucky February 21, 1825. In that locality he remained until he reached manhood and at the age of 20 years went to Indiana where on May 14, 1846 he united in marriage to Miss Martha A. Spillman. Soon after their marriage united with the Baptist Church with which denomination they were identified during the balance of their lives. Later they came to Missouri and lived for a time in Clay County, Missouri near Missouri City, also at Chillicothe, coming to Dewitt in 1882 which place has since been their permanent home. He was the father of nine children, four of whom with the wife and mother who died in 1897 have gone before him to the great beyond. The surviving children are: Mrs.Sarah E. Peery of Ray County, Missouri; Mrs. Vana L. Davis of Apache, Oklahoma; William P. Yarbrough of Coffeysburg, Missouri; John Yarbrough of Muskogee, Oklahoma; Mrs. Tillie Gwinn of this place and Oscar Yarbrough of Laplate, Missouri. He was the youngest and last survivor of a family of 11 children. As well as can be remembered he was ordained a deacon of the Baptist Church at this place in 1888. It is not known what time he united with the Masonic fraternity but the event took place sometime in his young manhood. Early in his life he learned the trade of blacksmith, which the infirmities of age forced his retirement from a life of labor. During the latter years of his life he was in feeble health and had almost completely lost his eyesight.

According to the obituary on her husband, Martha A Spillman married David E. Yarbrough on 11 March 1845 in Indiana. In the 1860 census for Clay Co., MO she is living in the adjoining household to Primrose Yarbrough and Robert H. Spillman. The death certificate on Robert H. Spillman says he was born in Georgetown, KY making it highly likely that he is a brother to Simeon B. Deering. And the proximity of Martha A. Yarbrough to Robert H. Spillman leads me to believe she is a sister to both Robert and Simeon Spillman.

Ralph Bruner at  [email protected]  has information that Martha Spillman and David E. Yarbrough were married in Johnson Co., IN
