Emanuel Shufflin's date of birth comes from his tombstone in Greenlawn
Cemetery in Columbus, OH His sister, Samantha, is listed in the
guardianship papers as also born in 1839. One or both of these primary
sources is wrong. There is no mention of Emanuel in the guardianship
papers. However, his brother, John Titus Shufflin, in buying out the other
heirs of his father's estate, in Pope Co., IL. Deed Book L. pg 486 "I, Emanuel
Shuflin, a son and heir at law of Timothy Shuflin deceased..." dated May 28,
1861 is selling his land to his brother. Emanuel would have been 21 if the
tombstone is correct. He is also the correct age in the 1880 census for
Portsmouth, Scioto Co., OH where he is listed as age 40, a Canal Boatsman.
He fought in the Civil War Co G 22nd Regiment, Ohio Infantry enlisting
27Apr/1861
He skipped back and forth from Portsmouth to Columbus. He was in prison for
manslaughter. Possibly a street brawl gone wrong.
