John Safford

John Safford was probably born about 1631. (1) His brother,
Joseph, was born about 1633 as he was deposed on 29 Mar 1692 stating that he was
about 59 or 60. (2) Joseph was named as administrator in his father's estate.
(3) In 1667 John gave surety for his "brother" Joseph, which indicates he
was also a son of Thomas Safford. (4) We know John Safford married Sarah Low
because in 1677 his father-in-law Thomas Low wrote a will naming his daughter
Sarah and granddaughter, Sarah Safford. (5)
John Safford was a
blacksmith and he probably married Sarah about 1661 as he purchased a house and
three acres in Ipswich on 19 Jan 1661. (6) John Safford died sometime before 16
Jun 1708 when Sarah "widow of John Safford, late deceased," and her son Thomas
and his wife sold some land to a Michael Farley. (7)

This book
refers to the court case where Joseph Safford gave his deposition in 1692
Salem Witch Hunts. Mrs. How wished to join the church but the people of
Ipswich objected since she had been declared a witch. "The wife of Joseph
Safford said 'though she was condemned before men she was justified before God.'
After this Joseph Safford was deposed that his son was taken strangely ill and
the following Sunday his wife was taken away with a 'raveing frenzy', raving for
two or three hours that Mrs. How aught to be admitted to the church, that she
was a saint, and much more of like nature.. She then fell into a stupor
for a short time and when she aroused, she exclaimed, 'I was ,mistaken.' "
