Thankful Paine was born in Canterbury Connecticut on March 25, 1733, the youngest daughter of Elisha Paine and Mary ( Johnson ) Paine. (1) She married Aaron Cleveland in Canterbury Connecticut on June 7, 1748. (2) She wrote her will on February 21, 1817. She left one half of her clothing and bedding to her daughter Abigail Cleaveland and the other half to the children of her deceased daughter Thankful Spaulding. The rest of the estate, by far the largest part, was left in equal parts to the children of her deceased son Moses Cleaveland, the children of Thankful Spaulding, to her daughter Abigail, and to her sons Aaron Jr, John, Paine, William Pitt and Camden. Her son William Pitt Cleaveland was made the executor of the will which was probated on September 29, 1822. (3) At the time she wrote her will in 1717 she had already lost two of her children and by the time she died in Canterbury on September 29, 1822, at the ripe old age of 89, she had lost three more children , Aaron Jr ( 1818 ), Paine ( 1818 ) and John ( 1820 ).(4)
