Matthew "Mowthrop" was baptized in Wrawby, Lincolnshire, England on 25 Feb 1633/34. (1)  However his death record on 1 Feb 1691, as recorded in the Barbour collection, reads that he was aged 53 when he died. (2) He was probably 58 and born a few days before the christening since his parents had married 11 months before his christening.  He probably came to the New England colony as a young child, since his father is recorded there in 1639.  Mathew Moulthrop married Hannah Thompson on 26 Jun 1662 in New Haven, CT. (3)  He was already involved in the iron works of that area.  By 1657 some of the workers were lawless, disorderly persons and Matthew Moulthrop was appointed "conservator of their morals.(4)  Later he was appointed constable in 1670, '74 and '75.
He and his wife, Hannah Thompson, seem to have had at least 9 children with the last being born in 1682.  He died nine years later in 1691 leaving an estate worth £1050 12 06. (5)

In May, 1656, the town granted twelve acres of land to the collier. ---  A large furnace farm, on the east side of the lake, was also granted to the proprietors.  -- John Cooper was the agent of the iron works, and lived on Stony creek: Captain Thomas Clark, the master, and later was one of the owners; Jasper Crayne was one of the overseers; Richard Post was a founder; John Russell and Ralph Russell were among the workmen.  It appears that others of the employees were lawless, and that the furnace had gathered some disorderly persons, so that complaint was made to the town, December 1st, 1657, on that score..  It was then agreed that those working there in the furnace should bring certificates of character, and later Matthew Moulthrop, 2d, was appointed conservator of the morals of the people of the iron works.

He was appointed constable on 14 Nov 1670 (page 267) and on 28 Dec 1674 (page 326) and 2 Jul 1675 (page 339)
