Peter Montague III

Peter Montague was a large landowner. He inherited half of the lands of his father.  He received another 1000 acres in 1652. (1)  Some have said this 1652 grant indicated he was at least 21 at the time. (2)  However, young children did receive land grants in those days. He married Mary, the daughter of Meindert Doodes around 1663. Some have stated a date of Nov 1665 but that is based on a land deed in which Peter purchased 200 acres from Doodes Minor and his wife Mary, and in that same year he leased back the same land for fifty-four years to Doodes Minor. (3) It is not a proof of marriage. We do, however, know that Peter Montague did marry the daughter of Minor Doodes.   Meindert Doodes' will  of 13 Dec 1677 bequeathed to his wife "Mary Doodes all the personal estate during her widowhood but if she should not marry, son Doodes Minor's children were to have half of the Negroes and the other half to go to Peter Montague for the sole use of his wife, and after her death to the sole use of her children." (4)
Peter Montague died sometime before 31 Dec 1681. (5) Since many parish records and court records have been lost or destroyed, there is no evidence of a will. However we know the names of some of his children. A marriage record for Mary Montague to Thomas Paine on Oct 24, 1682 indicates he had a daughter named Mary old enough to marry in 1682.Their is a patent for 1000 acres which  indicates he had a son named Peter. In Essex Co, VA there is a deed Feb 10, 1703 for 100 acres sold by William Montague, Jr., son of William Montague, Sr. of Middlesex, to William Montague, son of Peter Montague late of Middlesex Co.  This indicates that Peter Montague had a son named William. Catherine Montague was named by her grandson in his autobiography of 1811 and she named her fourth child Peter after her father.  We have the baptism for his son John in 1682.

From the book by  Robert Montague  "The patent for 1000 acres of land in Middlesex, issued to Peter, the son of this Peter, and grandson of Peter I, states that the said land was granted to the father of said Peter Dec, 1652, by patent from George Ludlow, Esq." - "On the 2d of June, 1662, Peter purchased from James Bolter and wife of Nansemond Co., 200 acres of land. Nov. 1665 Peter purchased from Doods Minor and his wife Mary Minor, 200 acres of land, on east side of deep Creek, and in the same year he leased said land for fifty-four years to said Doods Minor.  In 1668 there is a deed from Peter Montague to Thomas Banks.   Feb 15, 1668, there is an assignment, made by Peter Montague, to Thomas Banks and John Hawkins, of all his land in Nansemond Co."

(2) History and Genealogy of Peter Montague by George William Montague 1886
"Peter Montague, son of Peter, b. in Nansemond Co., Va.  He was at least 21 years of age in 1659, because at that date he was an executor of his father's will.  The patent for some acres of land in Middlesex, issued to Peter, the son of this Peter, and grandson of Peter I, states that said land was granted to the father of said Peter Dec., 1652, by patent from George Ludlow, Esq. Such patent would not have been granted to a minor, which appears to establish that Peter was at least 21 in 1652 - and 28 years old at the death of his father, in 1659.  This would place his birth in 1631 or 2. The wording of his father's will seems to render it certain that he was not married and had no children in 1659, when his father died.  He was at that time between 21 and 28 years of age."
