According to the family bible kept by Asa and Lydia Church, Lydia Lewis was born 14 Aug 1785. (1) Her parents were living in Barnstable, MA and did not move to Montpelier, VT until about 1800.  She married Asa Church in Montpelier on 18 May 1805. (2) He was seventeen and she was twenty years old.  After their marriage Asa and Lydia moved to Chittenden Co., Middlesex, VT and by the 1810 census they had a son and a daughter.  Lydia's parents and brothers were living close by. Their first four children were born in Vermont and then they moved to Licking County, OH where they resided until 1829.  By this time she had eight children and they moved again to Indiana.  Her parents were back in Montpelier.  Her father died in 1839 leaving her two dollars. (3)
Lydia and her husband moved several times.  They left Indiana for Greenbay Wisconsin in 1842 and in 1855 they moved to Carroll Co. IL  Her husband, Asa Church, died 4 Sep 1857 in Carroll Co. IL.  In 1860 Lydia was living with her son, Edward L. Church, in Freedom, Carroll Co., IL. (4)  Her age was listed as 76 and her place of birth MA.  There is no known record of Lydia in the 1870 census. Her son Edward was still living in Freedom, IL but Lydia was not listed as living in that household.  Her son Anson was living in the same county, but she is not listed with him in the 1870 census either.  All her other children were either deceased or living in either Iowa or Wisconsin.  Lydia died 8 Sep 1873 (5)  and was buried in Freedom, Carroll, IL. (6)  She was 88 years old.
