Abstract taken from John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 3 by Elizabeth Pearson White
John Lewis of Barnstable, yeoman, in his will dated 5 August 1736, probated 25 April 1739, mentioned his well-beloved wife, Elizabeth, who was given the use and improvement of the new end of his dwelling house and his two best cows, furniture, sheets, napkins, tablecoths and the use of suitable and necessary household stuff for her to keep house as long as she lived. He directed his sons, James and Shubael, to care for the cows and to provice their mother with specific amounts of grain, beef, flax, wool and firewood at her door, annually. All of the children except James and Shubael, had already been given most of their portions earlier, but in addition he gave £20 in money to son Edward; son John was given 5 shillings together with the privilege of using one-third of his landing place at Cooper's Island, which was to revert to James and Shubael; son Gershom received £65; daughter Elizabeth Snow was given £20; and unmarried daughter Thankful received £50 in money, a feather-bed and bedstead, a golden blanket and coverlet belonging to the nice chamber, and the liberty to live in the house with her mother as long as her mother survived, and then she was to have the chamber and privileges in the lean-to oven and the cellar, only as long as she continued unmarried, "but not to have the liberty of taking any body in to live with her." Sons James and Shubael Lewis were bequeathed equal halves in the real estate, both woodland and upland, meadows and housing, as specified in a Deed of Gift their father had made to them 2 April 1734. In return they were to pay all of the legacies within two years of their father's death. James and Shubael Lewis were named as joint executors. Witnesses were John Sturgis, Jr., Thomas Huckins and Peleg West. The will was presented for probate and acknowledged by all three witnesses 3 August 1739.
