Maria Koning

Feb 2021

Maria was the fourth child born to Abraham Koning and Susannah De Forest. However, two of those previously born children had died before she was born. One of them was a daughter named Maria, who had been born two years before this Maria. (1)  When she was about 2 years old Maria's parents moved from New York City to Second River (Belleville), Essex County, New Jersey, and were admitted by letter to the Second River Dutch Reformed Church on March 1, 1728. (2) Maria married Daniel Brouwer 10 Oct 1743 when she was 19 years old.  Daniel was 23 years old and lived a little over 20 miles away in Schraalenburgh.    Daniel's sister Rachel was a witness at the baptism of their first child, Leah. Maria's mother and step-father were witnesses at the baptism of their daughter, Susanna. (4) Daniel and Maria together were witnesses to the baptism of a child born to Daniel's sister, Mary Brouwer and they were also witnesses to the baptisms of of 2 of their grandchildren, both named Daniel. (5)
Her last child, Daniel, was born when she was 43 years old.  This youngest child was about 6 in 1774 when they moved to Conewago, PA in Lancaster County (near Gettysburg).  There was a large Dutch settlement there, but by the 1780's there was interest in moving on to Mercer County, KY. Daniel and Maria both died in 1791 shortly after their move to Mercer County.  Maria was about 66 years old.

An interesting aside

Daniel Brouwer, the great grandson of David Demarest, the immigrant, married Maria Koning, the great granddaughter of Adriane Koning, another immigrant.  David Demarest and Adriane Koning came to New York from Amsterdam on the same ship.  The Spotted Cow left Amsterdam on April 16, 1663.
