Will of James Jones Will Bk 13 pg 456-458 Essex County, VA
In the name of God Amen I James Jones of the County of Essex & Parish of
South Farnham, being of perfect sense and memory and reflecting on the
uncertainty of human life do dispose of the worldly good I am possessed of by
this my last will and Testament revoking all others by me heretofore.
Imprimis I give to my loving wife Catherine Jones five negros which I last
received from her deceased Father, by name, Gup, Charles, Jack Fanny & Juno:
also one feather Bed and furniture and my riding chair and chair above.to her my
said wife and her heirs forever in line of her claim of Dower or any other claim
of what nature soever she may make against my Estate after my decease.
Item. I give to my son James, all the ready money I may decd possessed of, and
also the following slaves, to wit Phil and his wife, Betty, and her children,
Sampson and be the son of Aga; to him my said son James and his heirs forever.
Item: I give to my Daughters Ann White, the use of a negro (?) named Dubrey and
her children, and a negroe woman named Pegg and her children, during the joint
lives of her and her husband Ambrose White & to the survivor of them during
their natural lives and in case my said daughter Ann shall leave offspring of
her body at her death, then to such Issue and their heirs forever; but if my
said daughter shall leave no offspring then I give one third part of the said
Slaves of her Increase to my son James, one other third part to my daughter
Martha, and one other third part to be equally divided between my Grandchildren,
Hannah Temple Gwanthney and and James Gwathney to them any said children and
grand children and her heirs forever. Item I give to my daughter Martha
Brondus, the use of a Negro Woman named Daffney and her children, and a young
negro woman named Hannah, during the joint lives of her and her husband Thomas
Broadus.Junr and to the survivor of them during their natural lives; and in case
my said Daughter Martha shall leave issue of her body at her death then to such
issue and their heirs forever, and if my said daughter Martha shall leave no
issue aforesaid then I give one third part of the said Slaves and their Increase
to my son James, one other third part to my daughter Ann and one other third
part to be equally divided between my Grand children Hannah Temple Gwathney and
James Gwathney, to them my said children and Grand Children and their heirs
forever. Item I give the following negores to wit a negroe woman named
Cate, now in the possession of my son inlaw Richard Gwathnay; a negro boy named
Will, a negroe boy named Ned, a negro boy named Plato, and a negroe Girl named
Sally and the Increase of the said Slaves to be equally divided between Hannah
Temple Gwathney & James Gwathney children of my daughter Betty late the wife of
said Richard Gwathney. the said negroes to remain under the direction of my son
James for the use of the said Hannah & James Gwathney until the said Hannah
shall arrive at the age of twenty one years or marry at which time she shall
receive her part and the remaining part shall continue under the direction of my
said son James for the use of the said James Gwathney until he shall arrive at
the age of twenty one years or marry (the annual profits to be applied towards
his maintenance of education) at which time he shall receive his part; all which
negroes I give as aforesaid afterwards to the said Hannah & James Gwathney and
their heirs, but if they shall both die before they shall have received their
part of the said negroes, or without leaving lawfull issue then I give the
negroes aforesaid to be equally divided among my three children James, Ann &
Martha to them and their heirs forever. Item I give all my remaining
negroes to be equally divided among my surviving children in the same manner and
under the same limitations & conditions on which they will receive the other
negroes I have respectively given them. Lastly I desire that all my Personal
Estate (not already described) may be sold and that the money arising therefrom
(after defraying my funeral expenses and paying my just debts) shall be equally
divided among my surviving children. I do (?) and appoint my son James and
my son inlaw Ambrose White Executors to this my last Will and Testament. In
witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand offered my seal this twenty fifth
day of April One thousand seven hundred & Eighty four.

already bequeathed to my son James Jones provided my wife Catharine Jones
