Twelve Virginia counties, where the western migration began

 By John Hastings Gwathmey  1979

King William County  pg 77

"Landsdowne, while not built by them, has been the home of four generations of Whites since 1818.  Horace White, the first of the family who owned it, married Hannah Temple Gwathmey, widow of Temple Dabney, in 1819. In 1860 James Gwathmey remodeled the building.  A diary in the White family tells of the raids of Sheridan and of Grant's encampment in the field of Landsdowne.  The war left the house in a devastated condition.  Recently it came into possession of J. W. Dabney, a grandson of Horace White.
