Mary Hotchkiss was one of the older children of Joseph and Esther Hotchkiss.
She may have been born on 24 Jun 1750 as is recorded in several books.(1) Her
death record says she was aged 76 which corresponds to this date. (2) She
married Eliju Moulthrop on 21 Nov 1770 when she was 20 years old. (3) Her
husband was active in the Revolutionary War. He was in a Connecticut
regiment for one month in 1775. Then in 1779 he started serving again through
Aug 1781. He became a sergeant. Then Eliju
Moulthrop died at the age of 35 on 27 Oct 1782. Mary Hotchkiss
was 32. They had five children at this time, with the youngest being born
the year her husband died.
She married Charles Upson, a very wealthy
widower with three young children, on 24 Nov 1784. (4) Mary Hotchkiss then had 8
children in her care, aged from 13 to 2. She joined the Wolcott
Congregational Church on 3 Jul 1785 and had her five children baptized there on
7 Jul 1785. (5) The next year, Oct 1785, Charles Upson was appointed
administrator of the estate of Eliju Molthrop at the request of his wife.
Mary received 135 rods of English meadow. (6) She then had 4 more children
with Charles Upson. It was a house full of children.
As stated, her
husband was a wealthy man. Charles Upson died 29 Apr 1809. He was
coming into his barn on top of a load of hay and hit his head on a beam. (4)
Mary Hotchkiss lived another 17 years and died 30 March 1826. (7)

Mouthrop and daughter of Joseph and Esther (Russell) Hotchkiss. She born June
24, 1750, East Haven. Died March 30, 1826, Wolcott.
Charles Upson lived on the family homestead. In January, 1778, he served on a
committee to collect money for clothing for the soldiers. In February 1782 he
performed the first recorded inoculation for small-pox. In 1783 he was appointed
one of the first selectmen of Waterbury. From 1789 to 1790 he is listed as a
deacon of the Wolcott church. In 1792 he subscribed the largest sum for the
settlement of Rev. Woodward and in 1805 he had the largest tax list of any man
in the Society. He was called Capt. Charles and "Squire" Charles. The first
title is believed to be one of courtesy and the second because of the many years
that he was Justice of the Peace."
