Loudoun County VA Records show that Thomas Hopewell, son of Samuel Hopewell, was bound out to Isaac Humphrey to become a blacksmith in 1773. (1)  He appeared on the Loudoun County tithables list in 1776 as "Mary Hopewell's Thos. Hopewell". (2) Judging from these two records he was probably born about 1755 in Fairfax, VA.  In 1757 the area became part of Loudoun Co.,VA
Thomas fought in the Revolution and was on the payroll of Captain Francis Welles under Col. Grayson by 1777. Also on the payroll register was Charles Melton, who was his first cousin. (3) Charles Melton testified for his brother John Hopewell on John's application for a revolutionary war pension just as John Hopewell testified for Charles Melton in his pension application.   Thomas Hopewell was made corporal by Oct 1778 with the last payroll recorded of July 1779 which stated that he would "draw  payment as corporal and return to ranks 1 Aug 1779." (4) In 1780 Thomas Hopewell had applied for a land grant and was refused due to desertion.  He appealed and explained that from Jan to Apr  1780 he was in the hospital in Philadelphia and then went to Leesburg, VA at which time his time of enlistment expired. (5)  His sergeant and Col Grayson validated his appeal.  It was certified by Francis Peyton, Lieut of Loudon Co. When he got out of the hospital he probably went home to Loudoun Co, VA and may have married there as his first child was born about 1781.
Eventually Thomas and his brother John Hopewell took off for KY.  Thomas did get the land warrant for 100 acres on 12 April 1784. (6)  In Oct 1793 he and his wife, Wilmoth were selling 90 acres in Mercer Co., KY to Alexander Clark for the sum of £40. (7)  The land was described as "Beginning on John Hopewell's Line at A Sugar Hickory." It was signed by Thomas and Wilmoth both making their marks and witnessed by John Miles, John Hopewell, Benj Lawless and Edward Button.  In 1794 both he and his brother John Hopewell were on the tax list in KY. (8)
In 1798 in Mercer Co., KY, Thomas Hopewell gave surety for the marriage of Chase Hughes to Mary Hopewell and in 1799 he gave consent for daughter Elizabeth to marry John Monroe. Both marriages were in Mercer Co., KY. (9)
In 1800 Thomas was on the tax list for Shelby Co., KY  and John Hopewell was on the tax list for Mercer Co., KY and John was still there in 1803 when his daughter Nancy married Robert Calvert.
On 11 Oct 1807 Thomas Hopewell  of Hardin Co. bought 1800 acres from Otho Farmer. (10)  On 5 Jun 1811 Thomas Hopewell  of the county of Bullitt was selling 400 acres of land in Hardin Co for £150  to Henry Crist and John Myers. (11)   Obviously he was buying and selling land in various counties.  In 1811 a man named Thomas Hopewell was on the tax list for Nelson Co., KY. (12)
However, in 1813 the brothers were both listed in Bullitt Co, KY. (13)  Thomas had 333 acres on Knob Creek. In 1812 he and his wife Wilmoth had sold, for love and affection of their son William Hopewell, the 303 acres on Knob Creek to John Beckwith with the provision that they live there during their lives. Thomas Hopewell acknowledged this indenture on 29 Aug 1812 and it was recorded 9 Aug 1813  (14) His sons Thomas Hopewell and Samuel Hopewell appeared on the Bullitt Co tax records in 1815 and 1816. (15) Thomas Hopewell had probably died in 1813.  In 1818 his widow, Wilmoth Hopewell, was listed on the tax records in Bullitt Co., KY with 303 acres and no males over 21.  John Hopewell was listed 6 names later. (16)  The genealogy found in Sullivan Co., IN states that "Thomas's wife was named Wilmouth. He died in 1812  leaving his land to his widow, Wilmouth and his son, William. William and wife, Matilda were in Spencer Co., Ind. in 1824 and sold land in Bullitt Co KY to Henry Small. After William's death Matilda evidently settled in KY again for she married Moses Welch there in 1840. Her daughter Clementine married Washington Shirley in 1840, and her daughter Rosanna married John Dale in 1839 and Martin McMullen in April 1843. Her son William married Lucy Ann Parris in 1849."
Wilmot Hopewell was listed in the 1820 census for Paris, Bullitt Co., KY on pg 9. She was over 45 and living with her were a female and male between the ages of 10-16. Also in Paris, Bullitt Co., KY, are Samuel Hopewell and "Hopewell". John Hopewell's daughter, Millie, married Abraham White in Bullitt Co., KY in 1808 and in 1820 Abraham White and Isaac White were also living in Paris, Bullitt Co., KY.
The last time Wilmouth Hopewell appeared on a tax record was in 1822. (17)

There was a man named Thomas Hopewell who was listed in the Kentucky Militia under Captain Jeremiah Briscoe's Company, Major John Caldwell's Battalion, Major General Charles Scott's Command.  July 8, 1794. However, he was a private and this Thomas Hopewell was a corporal.  (18)
