Samuel Hopewell

Samuel Hopewell first shows up on the records in Fairfax Co VA in 1752 and his brother John Hopewell appears a year later. John Hopewell's law suits in Fairfax County got dismissed, but Samuel Hopewell had to pay 1000 lbs of tobacco.  Loudoun County was formed from Fairfax County in 1757 and after that date the brothers were of Loudoun Co., VA.  Samuel Hopewell was living in Sherburne Parish, but John Hopewell over in Cameron Parish of Loudoun County.  Samuel Hopewell was a planter getting heavily into debt, and in 1762 there was  a court case against Samuel Hopewell and William King.  John Hopewell over in Cameron Parish was married to Hannah King and she had an uncle, and a cousin, named William King. The connection to the King family for both men, plus the naming patterns for their children makes is highly likely they were brothers. (Both had children named John, Samuel and Mary)
In the 1764 court case, Samuel Hopewell's father-in-law, Samuel Conner, gave evidence and Samuel Hopewell and William King had to pay him 372 lbs. of tobacco. (1)
Samuel Hopewell lost court case after court case from 1758 through 1772.  Then in 1773, Samuel sold everything he owned right down to his penknife and disappeared from the tax records. (2)
Previous to 1773 Samuel Hopewell had been on the tax rolls of Loudoun County from Sherburne Parish.  In 1770 Samuel Hopewell, John Hopewell and Jacob Freestone are listed in a clump.  His son, John Hopewell, would have just turned 21.   In 1771 and 1772 Samuel Hopewell and John Hopewell are listed together in a clump in Sherburne Parish.  In 1773 only John Hopewell is listed on the tax rolls.  He is listed as "John Hopewell (lives with Samuel Hopewell)".
One of the last court cases naming Samuel Hopewell was Samuel Canby vs. Samuel Hopewell in 1774.  He was already broke but the case indicates he owes £1. 14. 11.  Five years later in 1779 the same Samuel Canby brought suit against a John Hopewell.  This may be the John Hopewell, son of John Hopewell.  That suit was settled in 1782 and the John Hopewell, son of Samuel Hopewell, was in KY in 1783 when his daughter Milly was born.
Samuel Hopewell's father-in-law, Samuel Conner, had been prospering.  In 1771 Samuel Hopewell and "his wife, Mary", brought suit against Charles Conner. (Samuel Hopewell Vs. Charles Connah in Chancery Court) (3) Apparently Mary's father, Samuel Conner, had died and her brother, Charles Conner, was administering the estate and Samuel Hopewell and his wife, Mary, did not feel they were getting their fair share.  In 1788 Mary, without any mention of her husband, Samuel Hopewell, brought suit against the estate of her brother.  (4)
Samuel Hopewell died before 20 July 1794 leaving an estate of  £26.  Mary Hopewell was summoned to court to see whether she should be executrix of the estate.  (5)
