John Hemingway was born in New Haven on 29 May 1675. (1) He married Mary
Morris as is confirmed when "John Hemingway in right of my wife Mary" was one of
the administrators of the estate of John Morris. (2) He probably married her
about 1699 as their first child was born in May of 1700.
John and his
brother Abraham Hemingway took over the iron works of their father. In
1706 they "erected a fulling mill--to make cloth from wool--where the forge had stood."
(3) (4) John died 3 Feb 1736/7 at the age of 62. (5)
The will of John
Hemingway was proved in Oct 1737 and named wife Mary and son Samuel as
executors. It also named son John, and daughters, Mehitable, Mary, Desire and
Hannah. (6) He was buried in East Haven, New Haven Colony. (7) The names
of his children are listed in The Descendants of William and Elizabeth Tuttle.

John and Abraham Hemingway, owners of the New Haven Iron works, are recorded in Branford village records as requesting permission on August 23, 1706 to erect a fulling mill and raise the dam on the Branford side, which they are given permission. They were given Mill rights. The forge and mill, and surrounding lands, stayed in the Heminway family for 150 years, until the death of John Heminway IV.
