Lucretia Hegeman
by Susan Brooke
Jun 2021

Lucretia Hegeman was baptized 21 Apr 1723 in the New Utrecht Church of Brooklyn,  New York. (1) Her parents were Joseph Denys Hegeman and Alida Andriesz.  She married Garret Van Arsdale about 1748.  Garret's cousin, also named Garret Van Arsdale married Grietje (Lucretia) Vorrhees on 30 Apr 1748 in Flatbush and they also baptized their four children in the Harlingen Church. So, both men named Garret Van Arsdale were married to women named Lucretia and both set of parents had their first child baptized in 1749, just two months apart. (2) Thus it is easy to mix up the children born to each of these parents.  However, when Garret Van Arsdale married to Lucretia Hegeman wrote his will in 1782 he named his wife Gracey: sons Garrit and Isaac, son Joseph deceased with children Creasey and Ida, daughters Alleda Vanarsdale, Janetie Brewer, Chariety Vanarsdale and Sarah Vanarsdale.  Their first born child, Jan born in 1749, was named after Garret's father.
Since there is no found marriage record for Lucretia Hegeman and Gerret Van Arsdale, we look to other sources for her identity.  When their second child, Joseph VanArdalen, was baptized in 1751 the witnesses were transcribed as "Yoseph Hegeman and wife Alida." (2)  These witnesses were the parents of Lucretia Hegeman.  And as reported in The Vanguard Newsletter, Vol IV # 2, "On April 3, 1752, "Gerret Van Aersdalen and wife Criesje Hegeman" were received on confession of faith as members of the Harlingen Reformed Dutch Church, Montgomery Township, Somerset County, East Jersey." (4) This confirms her name was Lucretia Hegeman and they probably married about 1748 since their first child, Yan Van Arsdale, was baptized 23 Aug 1749.
Lucretia was alive when her husband, Garret Van Arsdale wrote his will in 1782 naming his wife Gracey. The estate was inventoried in 1784.  In looking at the tax records "Widow Van Arsdale" appeared on the records in 1783 with "no land."  She was listed again in 1784 and 1785 and then disappeared from the records.
