Biography of Margaret "Maggie" Groeninger
by Susan Brooke
March 2015
Margaret first appears in the 1882 Evansville City Directory when she was
living with her father, Andrew Groeninger, blacksmith, at 403 1st Av. Her
father died the next year in 1883 and in the 1884 directory Maggie is listed as
a weaver living with her mother, Johanna Groeninger, widow, at a new address,
515 6th Av. Maggie married Philip Best in 1885 and then two years later,
her mother died, leaving three young children, Maggie's sisblings, as orphans:
Tillie aged 16, Henry aged 15 and Andrew aged 12. Maggie's husband, Philip
Best, became their guardian. In the 1890 city Directory Philip is listed
with a Grocery and Saloon, living at 224 Fulton, the same address as Henry
Groeninger, molder. Tillie Groeninger had been at that address the year
before. In 1892 Andrew Groeninger, machinist is at that same address. By 1897
Philip had moved to 1 Ballard street where he owned a grocery store and saloon.
Philip Best died in 1905 leaving Maggie a widow with no children. However,
she continued to be involved with her nieces and nephews. In the 1920 census,
Edward Neu, son of her sister Christina, is living with her. In the 1930
census Edward's sister Maybe Neu is listed in her household.
