Biography of Henry F Groeninger
by Susan Brooke
April 2015

Henry came to America with his parents when he was about eight.  He married Maria Wiessen, a widow of  when he was about thirty-four.  He may have been married before, as his first two sons, William and Fred, were born before his marriage to the widow Moog.  In the 1865 city directory he is listed as a cigar maker, living at 4th b. Goodsell and Walker, the same address as his mother and siblings.  He then became a carpenter and was living at 111 E Pennsylvania in 1874.  His mother was next door at 109 E Pennsylvania.  However, since he is living at a separate address it might be assumed he was married.

Henry moved again in 1882, shortly after his marriage to Mary.  He is listed as a carpenter at 304 Goodsell from 1882-1884.  He is then listed as carpenter at 1032 E Columbia from 1885-1893.  In 1882 a Fred Groeninger, carpenter is at the same address and remains at the same address as Henry through 1900.  A Wm G Groeninger was living at 1032 E Columbia in 1889.  Edward O is listed at Henry's address of 319 Mary in 1897 and 1900.  And there is a birth record for Edward Otto Groeninger has a birth record - born 18 Sep 1881 to Henry Groeninger and Maria Biesen.  Selma Elisabetha Jacobine was born to Heinrich Groeninger and Maria Wiesen on 7 Jul 1881.  However, she was not baptized until 10 Aug 1884.  It is possible someone has transcribed her date of birth incorrectly.

In the 1900 census Henry Groeninger is a carpenter aged 43.  His wife, Mary, is 54.  His son William is 18.  His son Fred is 20.  His daughter Selma is 15.  Also in the household is William Moog, step-son, aged 30.
