Biography of George Gröninger
by Susan Brooke
May 2015

George Gröninger was the fifth child in his family and a farmer working the Lindelbrunner Hof near Vorderweidenthal in Bavaria as was his father.  He married his first wife, Eva Helfer, when he was 32.  They had a son George and then Eva died the next year.  Four years later, in 1831, George married Susanna Elisabetha Stauch.  Susanna was the daughter of Daniel Stauch and Catherina Bender as recorded in her marriage record, and she was baptized on Oct 7, 1799 in Contwig, Pfalz, Bavaria.  George had one child with her, Christina who was born in 1832.  There is no record of what happened to Susanna Elisabetha.  By 1834 he was married to Gertrud Stauch.  She too was the daughter of Daniel Stauch and Catharina Bender as mentioned in the settlement of estate of her father, Daniel Stauch, which can be seen below.

In 1836 George and Gertrud were named as farm laborers living on the Lindenbrunner Hof as seen in the settlement of estate of Daniel Stauch.  Then in 1844 they are in Pittsburgh, PA with their children being confirmed into the Smithfield Church.  George and Christina were confirmed on April 5, 1844.  Their siblings, Catherine and Louisa were confirmed in February 1848. So, sometime between 1836 and 1844 George Gröninger emigrated to America.  His brother Mathew and sister Christina had emigrated to Pittsburgh in 1837 so possibly George emigrated at about that same time. However, Mathew and Christina seem to have left Pittsburgh around 1842 while George is still there in 1848.

By 1850 brothers Mathew, George and two of the daughters of their sister Christina are in Harrison County Indiana.  Mathew is listed in the census on page 234 living next to George Zimerle (Married to Margaret Helfer, a daughter of Christina Gröninger. ) and Michael Veiock (married to Catharine Groninger, Mathew's daughter.)  Geo Graninger is listed on page 236 of the 1850 census living next to Charles Veiock (married to Maria Elizabeth Helfer, another daughter of Christina Gröninger.)

In 1850 George's land was valued at $400.  All four of his children are living with him, but his wife is listed as Catherine.  His wife died the very next year in 1851 and in the cemetery records "Charity Kraninger" is listed as the consort of "George Kraninger."
