Samuel's father, Gerrit Remmersen, had come to "Amersfoort" (Flatlands) in 1658 and married Samuel's widowed mother Mary in 1663.  They had five children, Samuel Gerritsen born 1 Oct 1671 being the third,  and then on 01 May 1678 when Samuel would have been about seven they all moved to York Island to a hamlet named Sapochkanika." (Greenwich)   His father died a little over seven months later on 27 Dec 1678.  His widowed mother, Mary, in 1678 had nine children, four from her first husband and five with Gerrit Remmersen.  Her oldest child was 27 and her youngest child only 3.  The family stayed on in Greenwich until 1685 when they moved to Gravesend, Kings, Long Island, NY.  (1)
When Samuel Gerritsen was 23 he married Ida Reyder on 14 June 1695. His mother, Mary, deeded some land to him in 1698 and he in turn gave her half his house for her lifetime. (2)  She died in Gravesend in 1721 at the age of 85.  Samuel Gerritsen's wife, Ida Teyder, died in 1751 at the age of 75 after 56 years of marriage. They had raised 9 children to adulthood.  However their daughter Aeltie had died in 1740 at the age of 35 and in 1746 they lost two sons: Jacobus who was 38 and Wilhelmus who was only 22.
Samuel Gerritsen died in 1763 less than a month short of his 92nd birthday.

The origin of the Garretson and Williamson families is revealed in a family bible record written by Sameul Gerritsen, the son of Mary and Gerrit Remmersen.  While the record was written in Dutch, there are two known unpublished translations, one made in 1884 by Judge Ricord and held by the Brooklyn Historical Society, and a second by Rosalie Fellows Bailey now at The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.  Rosalie Bailey translated the record using Hexham's Netherduytch Dictionarie, 1658 and 1675 editions, that was appropriate for the language of the time and probably led to a more accurate translation.
