His will is on record in the New York Surrogate's office (VIII,339) and
is dated 4th of the 1st month, 1714-15, five days before his death. He describes
himself as "John Fry of Oysterbay * * sick and weak of body, but with
understanding sound and memory good," * * And then he adds, "I will my immortal
soul into the hands of God who gave it, in hope of eternal salvation through
Jesus Christ my only Savior and Redeemer." He gives all his property, which
seems to be considerable, to his "beloved wife Mary Fry and daughter Mary Fry."
But he expected that his wife would soon become the mother of a second child,
and if the child should be a son, he was to have the chief part of the property,
reserving, however, a home of 102 acres, with one-half of all the moveable
property to his wife and daughter. He names as his Executors his "beloved wife
Mary Fry" and his "uncle William Fry," and his "loving friends Samuel Underhill
and William Willis."
And there is no restriction, such a some husbands unkindly make, on a second
marriage of the young widow whom he supposed he was about to leave. Nor was
there any need of such restrictions, for on the day of the date of the Will
which so lovingly remember her, the young wife was already four days dead. Her
death seems to have been concealed from her husband, perhaps in consideration of
his own fatal illness, for, as stated above, he died five days after the date of
the Will." quote from Adam and Anne Mott, by Cornell
William Willis was appointed guardian for the infant, Mary Fry. His youngest
son, Samuel, whom she afterwards married, was in his eleventh year.
