Susanna De Forest
by Susan Brooke
Mar 2021
Susanna De Forest was baptized 19 Aug 1694 in the New Amsterdam Dutch Reform
Church. Her parents, Henricus de Forest and Femmetje Flaesbeeck, had David
and Susanna de Forest, siblings of Henricus, as the witnesses. (1) Her
mother, Phoebe Flaesbeeck, must have died when Susanna was under 10. On 6 Feb
1709 her older brother, Barent de Forest, had his daughter Femmetje
baptized, named after their mother, yet only his father was there as witness.
(2) Her father remarried to Barbara Spong and by 1706 had moved to Hempstead,
Long Island. He died in 1715 when Susanna was 21 years old. (3) The next year
Susanna married Abraham Koning on 4 Nov 1716. (4) She was admitted to the Dutch
Reform Church on 26 Nov 1717. (5)
Susanna and Abraham Koning had 5 children
baptized in New York, with her brothers Barent and Gerrit as witnesses. (6) In
1720 she was a witness for the children baptized to her brothers Barent and
Jesse. (7) Then around 1626 they moved from New York City to Second River
(Belleville), Essex County, New Jersey, and were admitted by letter to the
Second River Dutch Reformed Church on March 1, 1728. (8) Their last 3 children
were baptized in New Jersey.
Her husband, Abraham Koning, died
sometime before 17 Aug 1737 when she was appointed administrator. (9) She had at
least three young children: Maria would have been about 13, Johannes 8 and
Henricus 3 years old. She remarried to Joris Ryerson sometime after the
death of his first wife who died 17 May 1743. In 1747 Joris Reyersen and
Susanna, his wife, were witnesses to the baptism of Susanna, daughter of her
daughter Maria. Joris only lived a few short years after their marriage,
dying in 1749. (8) She was 54 years old and widowed for the second time.
The
last known record for Susanna De Forest was on 2 Oct 1755 when she was a witness
to Abraham, son of her son John Koning. (10)
