House of John Chase
503 Main Street, Newbury, MA
"The John Chase house is reported to have been constructed during the late 17th or early 18th century for “husbandman” John Chase (1655-1739 or 1740). 1 According to a 1928 account, in 1698, John Chase “purchased ‘upland in the upper woods’ at the ‘Training Field,’… The house which he is supposed to have erected about 1699 is still standing and is the third east of the … Town House.”2 Chase fought in King Phillip’s War and was in the “Falls Fight” (at Turner’s Falls) in 1676.3 In 1701 or 1702, John Chase petitioned for a land grant for this service.4 John Chase was a cooper by trade."
(5) Seven Generations of the Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase by John Carroll Chase. 1928
"John was a soldier in King Philip's War under Capt. William turner and was
in the 'Falls Fight' at Turner's Fall, May 19, 1676. He was one to help
bury the brave commander there as he himself certified (Bodge's soldiers in King
Philips War, 251). In January 1701/02 he petitioned for a grant of land for this
service (Currier, History of Newbury, 1902. p. 511). At the age of 23 in
1678, he took the oath of allegiance in Newbury. He was a cooper by trade
and in 1688 paid a tax on one head, two horses and one cow. He settled at
first near the bank of the Merrimack river above the 'chain bridge'.
On Dec. 24, 1698, he purchased 'upland in the upper wood', at the 'training
Field' in the west end of the town (now West Newbury). The house which he
is supposed to have erected about 1699 is still standing and is the third east of
the present Town House."
John Chase of Newbury made his will 22 Oct
1730, which was proved 17 Nov 1739. Inventory taken 24 Nov 1740.
