Abraham Brouwer was born about 1765 in Schenectady, Province of New York. He married Lea Demarest on 29 Mar 1700 in the Dutch Reform Church in Hackensack, NJ. (1) When her father, John Demarest died in 1719, Abraham was made executor of his will. (2) His wife received a farm from her father's will. (3)  Leah's grandfather, David Demarest, had acquired about 5000 acres of land in Hackensack from both, Indians & Proprietors and in his will dated 26 Aug 1689, he granted all his real estate to his sons. Unfortunately, some of the land had been patented twice and there were so many other claims to the land "they were obliged to purchase their land at least four time." (4)  Eventually the claims were settled in 1720 when James Bollen quit claimed to the land for £60. Abraham Brouwer ended up with at least 230 acres. (5) (6)
Abraham wrote his will on 29 March 1725.  It wasn't proved until 19 Apr 1736. (7) However, his widow remarried on 15 May 1731 so we know Abraham Brouwer died sometime between 29 Mar 1725 and 15 May 1731. (8)

"At the time the land was granted to the desMarets family, the Governor probably was aware that the grant already was covered, at least in part, by a prior patent given to John Berry.  The desMarets did not patent their land immediately and later were so harassed by other claims that they were obliged to purchase their land at least four times.  After the death of David, Sr. the grant was withdrawn from his heirs and a smaller tract was given them, although the final grant was of large proportions.

It was ruled that 2000 of those acres belonged to James Bollen.  After much discussion, James Bollen, in 1720 sold those 2000 acres back to the people who were living on that land for £60.   Abraham Brower had at least 230 acres.
